Q #1: Is doing a lot of cardio a good idea if you eat too many calories one day?

Answer:

I don’t like to see exercise as a form of punishment or purging for overeating.

Here are 2 ways to deal with it better:

1) If this happens once a month, it’s not a big deal. Just live your normal life and stay consistent with your regular exercise pattern.

2) If this happens once a week, or several times a week, then it is an eating behavior problem that needs to be corrected, and excessive exercise is not the answer.

Build your body, don’t destroy it.

Q #2: What is the best interval training program for fat loss?

Answer:

No interval method has been proven to be the best for fat loss…but certainly intervals have been proven to be better than regular cardio for losing fat fast.

So using various intervals for fat loss is like using various rep ranges for muscle growth. That’s what I prefer.

That way, you train your muscle metabolism in three different energy systems and put your body in the ultimate fat-burning frenzy. This ensures that you will maximize your metabolism, as you burn more calories – and both carbohydrates and fat – during and after exercise. So forget the HR zone myth for fat loss. It’s all interval intensity.

Q #3: Craig, I started your beginner fat burning workout a few weeks ago (I’m finishing four weeks this week and then I plan to move on to the advanced fat burning workout for 4 weeks).

Over the past 14 months I have lost 85 pounds. Including the weight loss period I started walking almost every day and progressed to weight training and doing some hill runs in addition to walking. Have worked with dumbbells off and on. Have made some good progress. I need to continue losing another 20-30 pounds. All this is background.

My question is that I have read about 50 years (I’m 49) need more recovery time between exercises. I feel great doing the Turbulence Training workout – just checking with you to see if you have anything to suggest with someone my age doing this workout. I think I’m good at doing 3 times a week because the intensity is high, but the duration is not high.

Any insight would be helpful. I just want to continue something that I can continue for the long term.

Sounds like everything is fine. Fortunately, fat-burning workouts are designed to give you more recovery than a traditional 5-day-a-week body part training workout. Use days off for recovery methods (walk the dog, run your errands, etc.).

Every few months take a week off, do one low volume high intensity workout and do a few different things to boost your recovery.
