Science Is Catching Up to the Low Carb Lifestyle

It’s probably no secret that since the low-carb weight loss diet approach was published, arguably the most prominent proponent has been Dr. Robert Atkins; the medical profession in general, was not impressed. In fact, it can be suggested that many doctors, researchers and government agencies go to great lengths to convince us not to consider such a weight loss approach. Study after study is presented as evidence and supports their position. There is so much negative information in the media that it ends up being a weight loss method that if followed is not something that participants talk about openly. It is not socially acceptable. This seems to be a common method of blocking anything that is not the status quo.

But something happens along the way that begins to change things. Proponents of low-carb weight loss actually lose weight; it’s a lot They maintain weight and begin to show signs of other health-related benefits such as reduced cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure results, fewer Glycemic attacks and so on. Pressure on the medical establishment began to build and calls for more bone-fide research reached an all-time high. Over time, this call has led to an increasing number of studies showing there may be some validity to the diet approach. It is a start.

With approximately 60% of Americans overweight or obese and many of us suffering from related chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, the importance of providing safe and effective weight loss methods is critical. It seems most diets fail. My impression is that our inability to survive, the demands placed on us by our personal and professional lives and the lack of long-term results are major contributors to this failure. An approach that isn’t too restrictive with regards to food choices, offers early weight loss success in return for some initial buy-in to a plan over several weeks and can account for, predict and help resolve plateaus is noteworthy.

In fact, Gary Foster, Director of the Center for Obesity Research and Education at Temple University in Philadelphia was recently quoted as saying, “We’ve spent time where we’ll say the Atkins diet is bad for you. That’s an outdated post. This is a viable alternative for weight loss.”

It is important to state here that any approach that is safe, and once reviewed by your health care professional, helps you lose weight is very beneficial and worth considering. Some are better suited to your lifestyle and preferences. If so, follow them.

It should be your hope and objective that the initial weight loss will turn into a complete lifestyle change. Let’s face it, it’s our eating habits and lifestyle that cause the problem in the first place, unless a certain medical condition is the cause. In my opinion ultimately if there is no lifestyle change, there is no long term weight loss and maintenance of that weight loss. Welcome to the infamous “weight loss roller coaster,” which, it has been reported, can be harmful to your health in and of itself.

Recently, a summary of 17 studies that followed more than 1,100 obese individuals following a low-carb weight loss approach provided some very interesting observations. On average, those who follow this diet, over 6 – 12 months lose almost 18 pounds. At worst that’s an average of 1.5 pounds a month over the course of the year. Who wouldn’t sign up for that first?

It looks like dieters have improved their figure by shedding a few inches around their waist, but that’s not all. They saw improvements in other categories as well. Specifically, areas such as blood pressure, blood sugar, blood fat and good cholesterol have improved while bad cholesterol (LDL) has not changed. The bottom line is that by improving heart disease and other risk factors, our dieters become healthier. Isn’t that what it’s all about?

I know that the medical profession is a dedicated, often selfless group of people. In addition to not inconveniencing us and curing our ailments, they are committed to protecting our greater good. Now, a bit of science is behind the low-carb weight loss lifestyle. I would like to see more physicians look at both of these researches so that those of us following this approach can become more mainstream; spread the good news to more people who will benefit from it.
