The 1963-1967 Corvette Sting Ray

The second generation Corvette was the 1963-1967 Sting Ray, not to be confused with the third generation 1968-82 Stingray (1 word). The design is a reflection of the many photo ideas of new GM Bill Mitchell. The interior featured a double hood similar to previous Corvettes, but updated for the Sting Ray. Beginning in 1963 the first mature coupe was released, featuring a two-part rear window design. Bill Mitchell’s idea is to create a visual connection to the raised parts in the middle of the helmet. The feature was released in 1964 due to limited rear visibility. However the 1963 Sting Ray coupe was the most sought after model of the second generation Corvettes.

Like all Corvettes, the Sting Ray’s body is made of fiberglass panels mounted on a steel ladder frame. Another new feature is the hidden twin pop-up lights, which not only add to the look but also contribute to aerodynamic efficiency. Other styling cues of the Sting Ray include a side-mounted blemish, an electric exhaust on the hood (this is more common on Corvettes with big-block engines), and the lack of a trunk lid (the right from behind the seats). Additionally, the Corvette’s convertible top folds flat when not in use and is stored under the cardboard floorboard behind the wheel. There was also a selection of hard tops. Different model year Sting Ray’s often had different side vent designs, such as 1967 had 5 side vents, 1965 and 1966 models had 3 vents. side, 1963-64 was half horizontal.

Sting Rays came in three engine sizes, 327 cid, 396 cid and 427 cid. Horse power varies between 250 and 435 hp. The 396 engine was only offered in 1965, and was dropped in 1966 for the 427. The 1967 L88 427 cid V8 marked the peak of performance for the second generation Corvette. V8 engines drive the rear wheels via a four-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission. The Sting Ray also has an alloy clutch housing and manual gearbox to help with weight reduction and weight distribution. The 1963 Sting Ray was the first Corvette to have independent suspension. 1965 was the first to have 4 wheel disc brakes.

The 63 Corvette also had a racing option, the Z-06. The Z-06 was designed by Zora Arkus-Duntoz as a racer. The Z-06 option included a fuel-injected 327 cid V8, 36.5 gallon fuel tank, heavy-duty brakes, heavy-duty suspension, and knock-out wheels. The heavy duty brakes are drums and braided metal discs, electrically assisted and backed up by a dual circuit master cylinder. The “elephant ear” blows fresh air into the drums and coolers and turns them into the floor.

For 1967, four versions of the 427 were available. The first version, the L36, costs just $200 more and features a carbon four, 10.25:1 compression and hydraulics. It was rated at 390 bhp. Next up was the $305 L68 which featured three Holley two-barrel carbs (a first for a Corvette) and was good for 400 bhp. Up is the L71 with three two-barrel Holley carbs, solid intakes, special performance cams, and 11:1 compression rated at 435 bhp. Very rare (only 20 were made) is the top of the line L88 for $948 more. The L88 featured new aluminum heads, a 12.5:1 ratio, and a single Holley four-cylinder rated at 850 cfm sitting on an aluminum intake manifold with a specially raised plenum chamber. Additionally, you got transistor actuation and a Positraction differential but you didn’t get a fan shroud, heater, or cooler. Chevrolet refused to reveal the true power of the engine and rated power at only 430 bhp, but most experts believed it was closer to 600 bhp! In total, 9,707 big blocks were built, meaning 42.31% of all 1967 Corvettes were 427s. With the L36 and L68, buyers can choose between wide-ratio ($184) and close-ratio ($184) four-speed manuals or Powerglide automatic transmissions ($194). Only the L71 came with a four-speed manual transmission. Rear gear ratios range from 3.08 to 4.11. Other options include side-mounted tubes for $132, cast aluminum wheels for $263 and a convertible top for $232.
