First, I want you to create a timeline in your head. On the far left you have the year 1850. Yes, I realize that is over 150 years ago, but bear with me.

That’s why I prefer to look at the routines and strategies that were created BEFORE 1940. Because you know everyone who gained muscle before 1940 did it WITHOUT the use of drugs and steroids because steroids were not invented yet .

With that in mind, here are 3 strategies for building muscle without steroids. Each of these strategies was created, developed and implemented long before steroids were even invented:

Strategy #1: Lift hard and heavy, short and sweet.

Most guys who complain about the inability to gain weight are simply doing too much in the gym. You should train only three times a week and each training session should contain only three exercises.

Back in the 1920s (before steroids were invented), a guy named J. Hise gained 29 pounds in a month by working out just three times a week. Also, he ONLY did the next three exercises.

Strategy #2: Eat (and drink) more protein

Of course, the real secret to packing on muscle mass is to eat (and drink) more protein. Muscles are made up of water and protein, so it only makes sense that you need extra protein if you’re trying to gain weight.

Focus on eggs, beef, tuna, turkey, chicken and anything else you can get your hands on. And don’t forget about milk. J. Hise drank more than a gallon of milk per day when his mass gain training.

Strategy #3: Sleep

Sounds simple enough, but sleep is the ultimate key to building muscle without drugs. When you sleep, your body releases growth hormones and testosterone. Drug users can get away with less sleep because they inject artificial growth hormones and artificial testosterone.

But drug-free, natural trainers like you and I need to maximize our body’s ability to produce the real thing. For ordinary people, 8 hours of sleep is enough. But for the drug-free athlete, shoot for 9 or even 10 hours of sleep per night.

Remember: before the light bulb was invented, our ancient ancestors got 10-12 hours of sleep per night PLUS an extra nap in the afternoon. So to maximize your natural hormones, get as much sleep as you can.
