Trichomonas vaginalis is the infecting organism in the STD called trichomoniasis. It is spread sexually through unprotected heterosexual intercourse – penis to vagina. Women can also get it from vulva to vulva contact with another infected woman. Men only get it from infected women.
The infecting parasite is a single-celled protozoa. Protozoa are common but are not bacteria or viruses. They are mobile living creatures that look more like small animals, but some also have plant-like characteristics. The amoeba is a commonly known protozoan parasite of the human intestinal tract. Trichomonas is an infection of the genital tract but I have seen it in the tonsils of men who had oral sex with infected women.
Trichomonas infection can cause a vaginal discharge in women. It causes the woman’s vaginal mucosa or mucous membranes to become very inflamed and makes her more susceptible to HIV infection and more contagious if she has HIV. It can cause low birth weight in the babies of infected women and can be a cause of premature labour.
The diagnosis is much easier to make in women than in men. The diagnosis is suspected in women with vaginal discharge that has a bad smell, is gray and foamy and associated with inflammation and ulceration of the vaginal mucosa or lining. A sample of the discharge examined under the microscope will show the protozoan that moves in the vaginal secretions. These can also be found in the urethral discharge of men, but are more difficult to find. For this reason, male partners of infected women are often treated, even if they are asymptomatic.
