In your Martial Arts training you are constantly reminded of simplicity. The most effective strikes are simple and direct. The best defense is based on the simple but elegant circle. Your instructor probably constantly reminds you to control your opponent with simple and excursion-free techniques. If everything in your Martial Arts training is based on simple and effortless movements, why should your Martial Arts diet be any different?
Simplicity in your diet makes it easier for you to follow. By keeping your diet simple, it can become part of your lifestyle, just like your Martial Arts training has. Most importantly, if you stay away from all scientific measurements, and calorie counting, you will be forced to listen to your body; and learn to adjust based on your body needs.
What is a simple diet for Martial Arts?
A simple diet is a diet where you use common sense instead of food choice charts. If youare using a simple diet for your mixed martial arts training, you should listen to your body’s fueling needs instead of measuring food portions. You are taught at an early age which foods have nutritional value, and which foods are full of empty calories. You know the value of eating fruits and vegetables over consuming a pound of red meat. You don’t need a new healthy eating chart to tell you the difference in how you feel when you choose fresh food over processed food.
As a Martial Artist, you train every day to follow your instincts, and your techniques become second nature to you. Your food choices should be no different. When your body needs some quick fuel, what do your instincts tell you: reach for the Snickers, or reach for the Orange? Follow your instincts constantly and soon you won’t have to make decisions, your food choices will be natural.
As a Martial Artist you learn less is more. You learn how to move your opponent without putting in huge amounts of wasted effort. Less is more should be part of your simple diet. Through the use of the student we are proud of the Dojo, while at the dinner table it is not necessary to measure your food. Moderation is the key. Eat less per meal, and more meals per day. The simple diet less is more philosophy.
What is the best diet for someone in the Martial Arts? Ask your body, and listen when it tells you. Your body will tell you more about what it needs than any “clinically proven” fad diet will ever be able to tell you.
