Helping your dog lose weight is not easy at all. I have been trying to lose weight from my five year old yellow lab for over a year. I know they have a reputation for gaining weight easily and becoming lethargic as they age, and have no idea when they are full. They are a bottomless pit. All this seems true.
So when my dog was older, my vet encouraged me to bring him down from 86 to 80 pounds because he was still competing in obedience trials. So more than a year ago I ordered that the family stop feeding scraps from the table. It didn’t happen. I switched to a higher quality food and fed a smaller portion. But he would lose a pound and then gain two back.
Then I received his diagnosis of hip dysplasia in one hip and arthritis in both hips. The vet informed me that his body would wear out before his mind and he needed to lose the extra weight. I did a little research on the web and talked to a lot of dog owners. Here is what has brought us success.
First and foremost, everyone agreed on absolutely no human food scraps. Second, I reduced his portion to a cup in the morning and a cup at night, but I mixed in a cup of low sodium green beans and some canned pumpkin. I also sprinkled a little low sodium chicken broth on the whole concoction. He also walked with me three times a week.
We did that faithfully for the first three weeks and he lost three kilos! I am very happy with this outcome. In three weeks we go back for another wave and I expect the last three to be gone.
There has been a small problem in the last few days. Beau has become more finicky, and will refuse his food. This tells me that his stomach capacity has shrunk, which is good. What I have done to alleviate his boredom is to switch things up. Some days I only serve food and green beans. Another feeding is only food and pumpkin. If we didn’t exercise much that day, it might just be dinner with a little broth on it.
So the magic equation seems to be the same for dogs as it is for humans. Reduced portions, increased fiber and exercise leads to weight loss success.
