Are You a Bread Addict?
Bread has a combination of taste, texture and high carbohydrate content that makes it so enjoyable that for many people, it’s hard to stop eating it – especially if it’s fresh and hot from the oven. In fact, there is a chemical process that occurs in the body when you eat bread that prompts you to eat more.
Is it any wonder that the diet warns us about bread – white bread in particular. White bread is made from refined white flour and, while tasty, it is clearly not good for keeping our bodies in good condition.
Can you have a bread addiction? Ask yourself these questions:
* Do you feel the urge to eat bread products instead of other foods?
* Do you have a strong desire for bread, pastries, cakes and cookies?
* Do you often continue eating bread even when you feel full?
* Do you feel relaxed after eating a full bread product?
* Shortly after eating, do you crave more bread products?
If that sounds familiar, you may have a bread addiction. Not surprisingly, about 75% of all overweight people are addicted to bread and other carbohydrate-laden products.
Okay…maybe you’re a bread addict. Why is bread so irresistible and addictive? Bread is made from grains. It has healthy fiber…not all carbs. It is made from all natural ingredients but why is it so addictive to so many people?
One answer is that, at least in North American and European societies, we grow up with bread. It is served with most dishes and is definitely a comfort food. Toast, dinner rolls, sandwiches, hamburgers and hotdogs, brioche. Then of course there are pastries, croissants, muffins, pies and over-the-top-in-carbs donuts.
People handle bread differently. Some can take it or leave it. They can have toast for breakfast and that’s it. But if you then eat a mid-morning danish, a muffin or doughnut, a hamburger for lunch, an afternoon cookie, a roll or two with dinner and maybe even a bedtime snack to keep the cravings at bay, you’re hooked! You’re eating more than you need and it’s probably getting harder to fit into your clothes.
If you find yourself often thinking about your next snack or meal, you’re probably addicted! Bread can really be as addictive as a drug. The problem is that when you eat bread, your body releases insulin. Eat too much bread and your body produces too much insulin. This “hunger hormone” stimulates your appetite. Another problem is that it takes about 20 minutes for your brain to realize you’re full, so the last 20 minutes you eat are really overeating.
Over time, you can develop resistance to insulin and your body may stop producing insulin. This is abnormal and glucose, which normally feeds your internal organs, can remain trapped in your bloodstream – causing parts of your body to malfunction and possibly leading to Type 2 diabetes.
If you have high levels of glucose in your blood, it can cause hunger too and you will crave foods with high levels of carbohydrates, i.e. bread. More bread = more insulin released. More insulin released = more insulin trapped in the bloodstream = cravings for more high carb foods. Talk about an unhealthy cycle!
This coupled with the comfort food feel makes it easy to understand why it’s so easy to become a bread addict. When people are bored, stressed, angry, lonely or sad, what happens? They eat! It’s usually the high-carb comfort food they crave because they’re looking for that feeling of well-being and they believe eating comfort food, which is mostly bread, will help. Maybe so… but it’s short term. This is a form of self-medication, like taking aspirin for a headache. It only lasts for a while and then you have to take more aspirin. Similarly, bread offers a quick but temporary fix, which can lead to a bread binge.
Whole grain, multigrain and rye breads are not very addictive for most people. When the body ingests white bread (or cake for that matter), it is broken down into sugar, causing blood glucose levels to rise. After this rapid digestion, blood glucose drops rapidly, resulting in hunger and cravings for more carbohydrates.
If you’re a bread lover, it’s not easy to break the habit. However, it is important for your health to stop the habit. You don’t have to give up bread completely. Of course you don’t. But eat whole wheat, multigrain or rye bread instead of white. And it’s not just the bread but what you put on it. Instead of butter or margarine, try applying a little olive oil. This is good for your body and contains less fat than the other two options. Also look for jams with less sugar – or no sugar but Maltitol.
Try to limit the amount of bread you eat in a day. Instead of two sandwiches, try one with the same amount of filling as two but half loaves. Slowly, your body will adjust and you will be healthier for it. Most importantly, you will break the bread addiction and control what you eat – it will not control you.
