New Acne Treatments – The Acne Drugs, Creams and Therapies that Could be Coming to a Shelf Near You
My first encounter with acne medicine, if you will, happened when I was twelve. My grandmother just saw a big, swollen zit bubble on my cheek. Painful at the sight of my hideous facial growth, Grandma motioned me to her medicine cabinet and begged, “Put some turpentine on that sore to suck out that poison”. And follow that backwoods recipe that I did.
Sure, turpentine is not an FDA-approved acne medicine, but by the next morning that swollen lump had somehow flattened into healed skin.
Not all sit stories end in such quick bliss.
Many people who suffer from pimples find no relief with familiar pustule terminators such as benzoyl peroxide or antibiotics. And so researchers work away in laboratories and challenge the condition of the skin with pimples with yet another preventive measure for acne. This summer, however, the entourage of new acne therapies could make blemishes recede from the skin.
Reduced dosage of isotretinoin
To begin with, doctors may quickly prescribe the acne drug typically reserved for the most severe cases of cystic or nodular acne, isotretinoin, for mild to moderate cases of acne. This past June, a study published in the Expert Review of Dermatology found that an intermittent, low-dose regimen of isotretinoin can reduce potentially caustic side effects of isotretinoin, such as liver damage and extreme skin dryness, while still effectively treating acne.
Bio-identical agents for acne prevention
While isotretinoin affects acne control by reducing facial oil secretion and bacterial counts, a recently patented bioproduct called phytosphingosine (PS) can fight acne by reducing pain caused by inflammation.
Phytosphingosine (PS) is a fat that exists in the upper layers of the skin called the stratum corneum. According to a report in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, a skin-identical version of phytosphingosine exhibited antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties in the skin. Researchers suspect that this new anti-acne drug may soon complement current acne treatments.
Less dangerous contraceptives
If such fat-laden topical acne creams prove insufficient to tame blooming blemishes, the woman can bolster her skin care regimen with contraceptives. And with the arrival of a new hormonal agent called drospirenone, women can enjoy fewer pimples and a more comfortable period.
Doctors may prescribe an oral contraceptive mixture of spirolactone and ethinyl estradiol to female acne patients over 35 years of age.
Like spironolactone, drospirenone helps control acne by reducing androgenic hormonal activity as well as overproduction of facial oil. Yet when drospirenone displaces spirolactone in such contraceptives, women experience better acne control and less menstrual weight gain and pain while enjoying the same level of effective birth control.
While I don’t foresee a pain derivative like turpentine stealing the acne-controlling spotlight from isotretinoin, phytosphingosine, or birth control pills, I predict that in a generation from now, scientists will understand the multiple causes and contributors to acne lesions. and keep our cupboards full of test-worthy acne antidotes. In the meantime, “Thank you Grandma.”
