Burn Fats Fast – How to Rev Up Your Metabolic Rate to Help You Drop Unwanted Pounds Quickly!

You may be aware of the inverse relationship between decreasing metabolism and increasing body weight. One of the factors attributed to weight gain is slowing of metabolism due to aging. Just what is metabolic rate and how does it affect your weight?

Before we examine the details, let’s look at some definitions:-

  • Metabolism is defined as the rate at which the body produces and consumes energy and calories to support life;
  • The Resting or Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) measures the amount of energy required to support the body’s most basic functions at rest.

You may notice that the conversion of food to energy and your body’s use of that energy (your metabolism) play an important role in weight control. When youare excessive and produce more energy than your body needs, those extra calories are stored in your body and translate into weight gain.

When you start adding weight, especially for women, you will experience a dip in your metabolic rate. In other words, if, for example, a moderately active 35-year-old woman ate X number of calories per day to maintain a 60 kg frame, she may gain weight by eating the same X number of calories by the time she is 45 years old becomes For some people, the gains can be gradual and small and it’s not until you realize that you can no longer fit into those skinny jeans. Assuming you apply 0.5 kg per year, it all adds up after say 10 years. In reality, metabolic rate varies across genders and individuals and some people can put on more than others and if you don’t do something about it, it might be too late because by then you’ve probably put on a lot of pounds!

The only way to keep unwanted pounds off, that is, to burn calories over and above your BMR is by incorporating consistent and regular exercise into your lifestyle to counteract the effects of slowing metabolism that occurs when you enter midlife. Some of you may have started to notice that the same workout plan that worked for you a few years ago is not achieving the same results today. Similarly, you may also find that the exercise plan that your friend has successfully used to shed those extra fats may not work on you. Metabolism is probably one of the underlying factors that caused the disparity

Another thing to note is that you start to lose your lean muscle mass as you get older. Because muscle helps burn those calories, a slower metabolism means you burn fewer calories. The amount of lean body mass you have is essential in determining the rate your body burns calories. Your metabolism slows down as your lean body mass drops! In other words, every pound of lean muscle mass lost means fewer calories burned.

You may also have observed that some women resort to crash diets to achieve their weight loss goal quickly. Fasting is often the preference of many people trying to lose weight because it is the number one excuse for not exercising – no time! This may have worked well for some of you who may have tried to crash diet but the older you get the less effective it becomes as crash dieting will lead to loss of your lean muscle mass along with fats.

What many people don’t realize is that when you try to lose weight by starving yourself, your body is receiving signals that you are now in a “famine”. Your body will then respond by conserving energy, which leads to the slowing of your metabolic rate. Once you return to your normal diet, you will also gain weight back as soon as you lose it, especially as you age, due to the natural tendency of a reduced metabolic rate, along with deliberate attempts to increase your metabolism slow down by opting for a crash diet.

You’ve probably discovered by this point that building lean muscle mass is one way to manage your weight. The more lean muscle you have, the more calories your body can burn. To achieve successful weight loss, you must aim to reduce your body fat mass and increase lean muscle mass. Although we can’t turn back the clock or freeze time, there are some things we can do to jumpstart our metabolism.
