Merits And Demerits Of Starving The Body In Weight Loss Efforts

Starvation is a popular weight loss strategy that has both merits and demerits that anyone trying to lose weight should understand. No one can dispute that excessive fat is a pandemic in modern society. Millions of people, including children, are either obese or overweight. The natural consequence of this situation is the proliferation of lifestyle disorders such as obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular complications and various forms of cancer, to name a few. People resort to different approaches to shed off excess weight, and hunger is one of them.

Starving the body has two important benefits in weight loss. For starters, it gives the body time to digest what it has eaten. Slow digestion as a result of overloading the digestive system is one of the reasons for being overweight. The body stores excess food as fat, even when it struggles to absorb another meal. Starvation helps the body digest and assimilate the food in the system, and thus prepare for another serving. As a result, it prevents weight loss.

Second, when the body is starved, there is less stress on body organs and systems, helping them to function optimally. Every time you eat food, every organ has a role to play in making sure nutrients are absorbed and waste is expelled. Overeating affects the digestive, excretory and circulatory systems. It also exercises the accessory organs such as the liver, kidneys and the heart. Withholding food from the body relieves this tension and allows the organs and systems to deal exhaustively with the food in the system. As a result, there is little room for food storage in the form of fat.

On the other hand, starvation is detrimental to weight loss efforts. First of all, the body needs all kinds of nutrients to survive. While carbohydrates are the main contributors to excess weight gain, starvation means that the body lacks its daily share of minerals, vitamins, fats and proteins. As a result, your body will become weak and unable to sustain your weight loss efforts.

Second, and closely related to the first reason, hunger often leads to overeating. A starving body unconsciously forces you to eat more food than necessary, and ‘hord’ it, in preparation for another period of starvation. Essentially, after starving the body for a day, you are likely to eat more food during the next meal. This excess food is stored as fat, which adds to your weight while you are working to reduce it.
