Sex and the Art of Greyhound Handicapping
There are many myths about sex and greyhound racing. Some people will tell you that female dogs are never as good as males. Some say that females are better than males, at least in some types of races and at some distances. Other people say that sex makes no difference. Men and women are equally likely to win, they say, and equally likely to lose.
I think that sex does have an effect on dog breeds. I think that sometimes whether a dog is male or female can give you an indication of whether the dog will win or lose. The only reason I think this way is because I have seen what to me looks like gender based differences in the dog breeds.
For one thing, female dogs have puppies. If they do, they stop racing until after the puppies are weaned. They undergo physical changes that affect them. They gain weight and then lose it after the cubs are born and while they are nursing them. When they return to the track to run, they may or may not be the same dog they were before they had babies.
Almost always, as any human mother can tell you, childbirth changes you permanently, physically and mentally. True, dogs are not people, but they are mammals and greyhounds are usually good mothers. If they have cubs, they are focused on them for the whole months until the farewell. Even after that, their minds may not be racing as much as they were before.
I can think of at least two females I bet that changed when they had puppies. One never won another race and didn’t really look like she was interested in racing. The other started doing better after having a litter of puppies. I have no idea why, but there was a noticeable improvement in her speed and stamina.
Males, although they do not have cubs, have their own sex-related problems. Some of them become aggressive when they reach maturity, and start turning their heads to fight, instead of keeping their minds on the lure. Some will walk alongside a female, rather than pass her, if they are more passive males.
Especially in the spring, the males are likely to really compete with each other when there are only one or two females in a race. I don’t know how many times I have seen the quiniela being the lone female and the oldest male in a race with only one female in the spring.
So, sex really matters in greyhound races, but not more than other factors such as form, class, post position etc. While I do not leave it out of my handicapping, I do not over-emphasize it either. Like everything else, it must be taken into account with the basis of your greyhound handicapping system.
