Women and Money in 2010 – The Girls Want to Get a Grip While Men Want to Get Ahead
There’s nothing like a recession for showing where we’ve gone wrong with our money management. But do recent events mean that people will be more financially cautious this year?
With all the horror stories about banks failing, property values falling and getting credit getting harder, I wonder how this will affect people’s financial management and planning. future, so I conducted my own research through internet research.
As the new year approached I asked 200 men and women about their past, and forecast, financial management. I was struck by the subtle, but significant, differences in the financial decisions of men and women. Women really wanted to improve their finances in 2010, while men were struggling to make ends meet.
The majority of men said they would focus on increasing income, with nearly three-thirds of them focusing on making more money in 2010. While half of women surveyed said that making money is also important, and many of them said that managing money is their top goal for the coming year. Here are the top decisions the survey found:
Women’s top five money resolutions for 2010:
- Better manage my finances (66%)
- Better value for money (63%)
- Plan my financial future (62%)
- Be more financially responsible (59%)
- Plan how to earn more money (56%)
Men’s top five money resolutions for 2010:
- Plan how to earn more money (73%)
- Plan my financial future (70%)
- Better value for money (70%)
- Better manage my finances (56%)
- Reduce my personal expenses (52%)
When we think about how good we are with money, our past financial mistakes often come to mind. That time we blew gas on a fancy car instead of paying off some debt. The money we left for a long time in a poor investment fund. Years we delayed starting a pension fund. When the economic climate is good, our finances can withstand these types of knocks. It’s when we’re struggling that we face the folly of our past actions. Of course, money spent carelessly in good times becomes liquid in bad times.
Not switching the mortgage to a lower interest rate, for example, could cost thousands of pounds over the course of the mortgage. Even the daily newspapers and magazines add up to hundreds every year. I’ve also discovered that one in three people have a direct debit from their bank account that they need to cancel, a magazine subscription they’ve forgotten about, a gym membership they never use, or a charity gift think they are one. -taken every year since 1989!
When I asked men and women in my research about their past money mistakes, it turned out that the biggest mistake women make is not being the same as men when it comes to asking for money. Whether it was pushing the boss for a raise or negotiating better rates for self-employment, many women held back because they were afraid to ask for money or limit what they could do. they send it.
When I looked at the differences between men’s and women’s spending habits, I found that women tend to spend more on emotional spending. For most women this means that they hit the stores when they are sad, sad, or depressed. Women were more likely to name child care as one of the financial constraints. This is another example of how money-wise, women aren’t very good at putting themselves first. After all, women are trained to care for others, and hard work is not a behavior that is encouraged in girls, but it is evident that later in life this leads to poverty. This is something I try to talk about in Sheconomics and indicated by the following statistics from the study:
Women’s (and men’s) past financial mistakes:
- Emotional exhaustion 70% (men 61%)
- Uselessness 64% (men 39%)
- Reluctance to ask for money 62% (male 47%)
- Spending on children/dependents 46% (men 30%)
- Fear of money 44% (men 48%)
