The Danger of Sugar And Fructose
I saw a very health conscious 40 year old man who, 6 months ago, successfully adopted a low carb lifestyle and lost 20 pounds. In the last three months, he added a morning smoothie with bananas and various “healthy” juices, as well as whey protein.
He has also started eating bananas and apples throughout the day, after workouts. His recent lab tests show that his fasting blood sugar is over 100 mg/dl, his triglycerides are up 50 points and his VLDL’s (very low density lipoproteins) have doubled.
In addition, he lost weight, although he worked out a lot, he gained weight and some fat around the mid-section. Are you wondering what is going on here? He is showing signs of fructose toxicity.
Sugar, or table sugar, is 50% fructose and 50% glucose. Juices, apples and bananas have a higher concentration of glucose which is around 60% fructose and 40% glucose.. Fructose is toxic. Metabolism of fructose in the liver increases triglycerides, VLDL and acyl-glycerols and gets trapped in your liver causing a fatty liver (increased levels of uric acid resulting in Diabetes and high blood pressure.)
Fortunately, these changes can be reversed quickly by eliminating sugars and high fructose foods. So, what is agriculture after and why is fructose toxic?
When you eat fruit that contains sugar or high fructose corn syrup, your body breaks it down into glucose and the glucose is stored in your gut. Glucose is used by your brain, muscles, digestive system and some by the heart, but the heart has a better flow of fat.
When glucose reaches your liver for metabolism, 80 percent is used by your body, and the remaining 20% is broken down in the liver. Unfortunately fructose is very different. Fructose is not used by your brain; your muscles and organs do not use it.
In fact, insulin levels don’t rise yet, so leptins don’t signal to your brain that you’ve eaten enough and that you’re full. So you’re still hungry. It is then transported 100% directly to the liver for metabolism. And here is the big problem. Your liver is overworked to metabolize chemicals.
Fructose enters the liver cells and is converted into 4 main compounds. The first is that many enzyme systems called de novo lipogenesis create new fat. So fructose creates fat, NOT fat!
The second produces compounds that bind to the liver and lead to an increase in liver function and a disease called fatty liver. The third is the production of VLDL or very low density lipoproteins which are said to be more atherogenic (produce arterial plaque) than the “bad” LDLs.
Finally, excess triglycerides are excreted from the liver and result in metabolic syndrome characterized by lipid abnormalities of high triglycerides, high VLDL, and low HDL. And it gets worse. Due to the heavy burden on the liver, uric acid increases. This is known to cause gout, but another problem with uric acid is that it prevents the blood vessels from relaxing, which can lead to blood clots.
So, to summarize, what do you call a substance that our body cannot use, and the only way to metabolize it is through the liver? And do broken fruits produce harmful effects on our bodies? That is the perfect definition of toxicity and fructose is toxic. So controlling sugar intake is a lifesaver.
