The Amazing Health Benefits of Tea
Health Benefits of Tea
A recent article in New Scientist Magazine states that several studies have shown that green tea protects against a variety of cancers, including lung, prostate and breast cancer.
EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate) is a powerful anti-oxidant that is abundant in green tea.
The health effects of tea have been studied since its discovery in China nearly 5000 years ago. It’s no wonder why it still has a place in traditional medicine. The World Health Organization defines traditional medicine as:
“Health practices, approaches, knowledge and beliefs that include plant, animal and mineral medicine, spiritual medicine, manual techniques and practices, are used to treat, diagnose and to prevent disease, to preserve life.”
Tea has been used for centuries for many health purposes. Most importantly, it has been used to prevent disease and maintain life. The various health benefits of tea are explained below.
What is Tea?
There are many different types of tea that we call. However, the word tea refers to the tea plant, also known as Camellia Sinensis. The leaves come from many different varieties of this plant, producing the teas we know as black tea, white tea, green tea, and oolong tea. There are many other teas available such as herbal tea, African Rooibos Tea. the South American Yerba Mate Tea and more. And since these teas are not derived from the Camellia Sinensis the plant, which is still called tea.
What is tea for health?
The health benefits of tea are endless. The reasons are endless because of the endless variety of beneficial teas, herbs, fruits, flowers, etc. in the world, that appear and become available to us. Most of these teas and herbs contain minerals, compounds, enzymes, and antioxidants that are very beneficial to the human body. Many studies have been conducted that show that tea is beneficial for the body and mind.
Health Benefits of Tea (Camellia Sinensis and Battle of the Freebies)
Black, green, white, and oolong teas come from a warm-weather tree called Camellia Sinensis. The leaves of this tea tree contain powerful antioxidants called polyphenols. Many studies have shown the anti-cancer properties and anti-aging properties of polyphenols. Some studies have shown that polyphenols reduce the risk of many types of cancer. Polyphenols do this by killing our body’s so-called free radicals.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines the free radical as follows:
“An atom or group of atoms that has at least one unpaired electron and is therefore inactive and highly reactive. In human tissues, free radicals can damage cells and believe to accelerate the progression of cancer, heart disease, and age-related diseases.”
Without giving you a Chemistry 101 flashback, we know that there are many different types of cells in the human body. Those cells are made up of different types of molecules, molecules held together by chemical bonds. Atoms consist of nuclei, neutrons, and many electrons, atoms, or protons. This means that the bonds do not separate leaving an unpaired electron. However, when a weak bond breaks, leaving an atom with an unpaired electron, a free radical is born. Free radicals are very neutral and react quickly with other compounds, trying to capture the electron they need to keep it. Basically, free radicals attack the nearest molecule and steal its electron. When the attacked molecule loses an electron, it becomes a free radical and starts a chain reaction. Once the process begins it can multiply, resulting in the disruption of the living cell.
Free radicals are produced in our bodies for a variety of reasons such as the immune response, metabolism, aging, and disease. Many external factors such as radiation, cigarette smoke, alcohol, and various chemicals and pesticides produce free radicals in our bodies. The human body can handle some free radicals using anti-oxidants, but as we age the amount of free radicals in our bodies increases. The antioxidant polyphenols found in tea do wonders to protect our bodies from free radicals. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by donating one of their own electrons, ending the electron-stealing reaction. Antioxidants are nutrients that do not become free radicals by donating an electron, because they are stable in both states. They act as antioxidants, helping to prevent cell and tissue damage that can lead to cell damage, disease, premature aging, and cancer.
In short, free radicals in our body can harm our cells. Diseases can cause premature aging, disease, illness, and cancer. Our bodies are exposed to free radicals from internal and external sources. Anti oxidants in tea can prevent cell damage caused by free radicals by stabilizing them in our body.
Other Health Benefits of Tea
Cancer – Many studies have shown that the antioxidant compounds in tea have cancer fighting properties. The tea also inhibits the DNA synthesis of leukemia and lung cancer cells
cells. Tea has been linked to the prevention and fight against many types of cancer.
Ministry of Health – Green tea has been shown to fight obesity and lower LDL “bad” cholesterol—two risk factors for heart disease and diabetes. Tea has also been shown to improve the function of blood vessels.
Anti-Stroke – Research presented at the International Stroke Conference in February 2009 found that drinking three or more cups of tea per day can reduce the risk of stroke by 21 %. The study, conducted at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that drinking various types of green and black tea has a significant effect on the risk of stroke and heart disease.
Anti-Arthritis – Tea has been found to prevent and heal rheumatoid arthritis.
Cultivate the Mental Garden – The amino acid L-theanine, found almost exclusively in the tea plant, affects the brain’s neurotransmitters and increases alpha-wave activity. The result is a calm, and alert, state of mind.
Weight Loss – In clinical trials conducted by the University of Geneva and the University of Birmingham it was found that tea increases metabolic rates, accelerates fat oxidation and improves the perception of insulin. In addition, green tea contains catechin polyphenols that increase thermogenesis (the production of heat by the body), thereby increasing fat burning.
Command System – L-theanine may help the body’s immune response when fighting disease, by increasing the disease-fighting ability of gamma delta T cells.
Advanced Levels Reduced – Drinking black tea lowers levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Platelet activation, which is linked to high blood pressure and the risk of heart attack, has also been shown to be lower in tea drinkers.
Oral health– Researchers at the University of Illinois, Chicago conducted a study that found that the polyphenols found in tea help the growth of bacteria that cause bad breath, and can prevent formation of dental cavities.
Cardiovascular Health– Research has shown that black tea improves the function of blood vessels, lowers blood pressure and stiffness of the arteries, indicating better heart health.
Tea appears to be a simple and pleasant way to increase physical, mental and physical well-being. In addition to the studies that have been conducted that show the great health benefits of tea…the simple act of making a cup of tea…and sitting down to enjoy it, seems to be very effects on the body, mind and spirit. This effect may not be very well measured by science. But, it’s just what we think.
