What prompted me to write this article is the increasing number of young people who come to my clinic (Diet Ritu) with various diseases. A girl in her teens came with PCOD, Hyperthyroid, high triglycerides and obesity. I then felt the need to educate children to learn lifelong habits of proper nutrition for mental and physical strength. You can find many such examples but who is to blame for their suffering? Stress, depression and obesity also affect children’s health. Obesity is the most common eating disorder and a major health concern worldwide. It puts stress on the kidneys, liver, heart and other organs and increases the risk of diabetes, heart problems, cancer and other life-threatening diseases. About 40 percent of cancers are diet-related, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research.

No two humans are alike; each as a different size, metabolic composition, body shape, health issues, genetic makeup and more. So there may not be a diet that works for everyone. Don’t believe if someone says that. Our diet needs to be adapted to our body’s needs. Individual needs for each nutrient are related to a person’s age, gender, level of physical activity, state of health and many other factors. Each nutrient has a specific series of functions. Excess or deficiency of nutrients can cause disease. For example, selenium (RDA 30-60 mcg) which is needed to maintain youth and slow down the aging process, is found mainly in barley and wheat. High doses of selenium can result in alopecia (patchy baldness), emotional instability and deficiency leads to cancer, cardio-vascular disease and premature aging.

Diet therapy is a better option than weight loss for those who have tried to lose weight through unhealthy means.

One should understand that the right way to lose weight is with a properly adjusted diet.

Did you know we need nutrients in our daily intake? Most foods contain some nutrients but no one food contains them all. That is why at least once a person should have a customized diet plan. When milk is converted into curd, can we convert the curd back into milk? The bottom line is that one should always take care of nutrition and remember that lifestyle diseases such as hypertension and diabetes do not disappear once they come into one’s life; they can only be controlled. So prevention is better than cure.
