Elliptical Trainer Workout – Stride Your Way to Fitness

Elliptical trainers are designed to simulate walking or running, a cross between walking and a treadmill. The biggest advantage with elliptical trainers is low impact. A good elliptical training session should last 30 minutes and should be done 3-4 times per week.

Heat the mixer on low for 5 minutes. Then walk to get your heart rate up to your training zone for 20 minutes and cool down for 5 minutes at an easy pace. Your breathing rate is determined from your maximum heart rate, which is 220 – your age. If you are just starting out, the best place to start is 60-70% of this maximum heart rate. For more advanced users, the best range is 70-80%.

As you become more proficient you can progress to short intervals of 1 minute fast and 2 minutes slow, repeating for a total of 20 minutes. Spinning on an exercise bike means going on an imaginary ride, going uphill to the point where you get out of the seat and pedaling, and going down fast. You can do the same thing on an elliptical trainer, which seems to go up and down, by varying the resistance.

Elliptical trainers are very versatile, for example if you lean forward on the handlebars you can do an upper body workout. You can walk backwards and forwards. Step forward and you’ll be exercising your quads, back, lower abs, hips and thighs. Walking backwards, your glutes, lower back, buttocks, thighs, and calves are targeted. They are the best home exercise equipment as they provide full body workouts.
