Your heart rate for cardio should be effective for men 226 minus your age or for women 220 minus your age x 50-75%. If you’re just starting to get in shape, shoot for 50% of your heart rate, and only 75% if you’re feeling really good.

Simply walking is a basic activity and does not provide the body with the benefits of regular exercise. Walking fast means that the leg muscles are stressed, breathing faster and sweating. Test your speed by seeing if you can talk or sing while walking. If you can sing, you’re not in a hurry.

To improve your health you need to strengthen your body. Strength and better endurance can only be achieved by pushing your body. When walking, check your heart rate and increase it to reach your target heart rate for good cardio.

Walking and running compete in cardio benefits. Burned classes are another way to determine if cardio is effective. A 160 pound person needs to walk 1 mile to burn 100 calories. The faster he walks the more calories he burns.
