The Cro-Magnon Diet – How the Cavemen Survived

The Cro-Magnon man, who was not a savage, took a healthy diet that would keep him and his entire Cro-Magnon family alive.

Lord no – not another kind of food! It seems like a lot of fat people have diet plans–myself included. No, I am not what you would call obese. I weigh 185 pounds and am 6 feet tall. But I have a big gut. Many doctors agree that there are three types of personality:

The gut sends me into the apple-shaped section. An apple body shape (where body fat is stored in the middle – ie the abdomen, chest and surrounding internal organs, such as the heart) is linked to health problems such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure and cancer.

The Caveman Diet

So what’s all this about the cro-magnons–cavemen. It’s just–I saw one of those pay-per-click ads on a TV station website. A picture of a fat woman was shown suggesting a way to get rid of belly fat. Then I read and watched a very interesting video. The narrator said we should eat like cavemen (and cavewomen) eat. According to researchers (no bones) most cro-magnons are muscular, trim and have very little body fat. The food they were chasing was one of the things they wanted. Yes, the market is flooded with all kinds of foods–some of which include supplements (diet pills that don’t work), junk foods, low-carb, high-fat foods, etc.

Try to imagine what our ancestors ate. During the warmer months they found a lot of new plant material – fruits (mostly fruits) and many wild vegetables. In the winter they eat meat, and it is easy to choose lean meat because they have the whole animal to collect. It is widely believed that Cro-Magnons vary their diet and calorie intake from day to day. It is difficult to eat the same food two days in a row.

So they discovered, 30,000 years ago, a true “Fat Burner” plant? Of course not. The body is the furnace, which burns (turns) food into useful nutrients. Food, in and of itself, doesn’t burn anything–so beware of these “Fat Burner Plans.” They probably won’t hurt you (I don’t think they will) but they will drain your wallet–and keep you fat.

The Human Body is Not a Machine

Your body is not a machine… but it adapts easily to what you feed it. If you eat the same thing every day your body will say, “Hey… there’s no need to burn this food. I think I’ll just store it as fat!” Oh! Therein lies the problem. This is exactly what happens when you eat a western style diet. They end up with too much sugar and refined carbohydrates as well as bad fats… not the healthy fats needed for good health.

Old people get a lot of healthy fats! The worst thing is that we get the same calories every day. Most modern diets recommend calculating your caloric intake based on your height, weight and age. I found a good calorie counter on about.com that says for me, at my age, I should eat foods that provide 2146 calories per day. But if you believe that this caveman diet is perfect, and you stick to the calorie count from the calculator, your body will say, “I’m used to this… No thanks…”

Be moderate in caloric intake

Yes, so I have to slow down every day with calories and special foods to eat… but I have to vary these foods and not eat the same things every day. It doesn’t seem to be difficult. In fact, it sounds easy enough that a caveman can do it!
