7 mistakes people make when treating Epstein Barr virus that can cause mononucleosis or glandular fever. These mistakes can delay your recovery and sometimes lead to secondary infections such as strep throat, pneumonia, sinus infections, or chronic fatigue syndrome. Let’s look at each of these errors in more detail:

Mistake 1 – Not resting your body

A common mistake people make is to not relax when they are first diagnosed with Epstein Barr disease. Symptoms of mononucleosis include fatigue, sore throat, swollen glands, muscle pain, headache, nausea and sometimes fever. Despite these troubling symptoms, some try to go to work, school or college, run a household, run errands and take care of their families. There is no way to quickly and completely recover from Epstein Barr unless you stop and rest your body.

Mistake 2 – Not sleeping properly

Continuing from this first mistake is the second mistake – not sleeping. Your body needs a good night’s sleep while recovering from Epstein Barr. While you sleep your body produces a hormone called growth hormone, which is your body’s natural growth hormone. Lack of sleep and sleeping too long (after 11 pm) will reduce the production of growth hormone.

Make sure you go to bed before 11 pm and sleep well, make sure you are not watching TV, playing computer games, drinking caffeine, doing chores, or jogging before sleep. Your goal is to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Waters can include pure water, herbal teas, lemon in hot water, soups, broths and fresh vegetable juices. Do not put tea, coffee, soft drinks or alcohol in your water as it can make you dehydrated and worse.

In some people with mononucleosis, the throat becomes very sore and inflamed, making it difficult to swallow. In such cases lemon juice and honey can warm the throat and make it easy to drink. Sucking on ice blocks can cause pain when fluids enter your body.

Mistake 4 – Eating the wrong foods

One of the simplest and easiest ways to treat Epstein Barr is to eat healthy foods. How well your immune system works is directly related to what you eat. If you eat the wrong foods such as sugar, white flour products, processed foods, alcohol, coffee and high fats there is no way you will recover from mononucleosis. Your body needs the right vitamins, minerals, enzymes, fiber and essential fats to boost your immune system, reduce fatigue and help your body deal with stress.

The best diet for treating Epstein Barr is based on good quality protein foods such as fish, organic chicken, tofu, whey protein, eggs, nuts, seeds and legumes. Every meal should be full of fresh fruit and vegetables – cover 80% of your plate with leafy greens, salads, vegetables and low carb fruit. Add to this some essential fats such as fish oil, avocado, cold-pressed olive oil or flaxseed oil, and you have a good diet to help you treat mononucleosis.

Mistake 5 – Treating Epstein Barr virus with antibiotics

Antibiotics are not effective in treating Epstein Barr virus. Antibiotics are only effective against bacteria and not viruses. Sometimes using antibiotics to treat Epstein Barr can cause skin rashes, fungal growth, itchiness and prevent infection.

Mistake 6 – Not taking the right supplements

One of the fastest ways to treat Epstein Barr is to add some supplements to your routine. I give my mononucleosis patients vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium with good results. B complex and magnesium are also beneficial in repairing the adrenal glands, improving energy levels and ensuring a good night’s sleep.

There are also some good herbs for the treatment of Epstein Barr. The best ones are Olive Leaf extract, echinacea, garlic and astragalus. The amount of nutrients and herbs you need will vary depending on your age, the severity of your illness and how much food you eat.

Mistake 7 – Resuming operations too early

A quick return to vigorous exercise and daily activities is a sure fire way to get you back to square one. Many people start to feel better and go back to their old sport or work, only to find that they have relapsed and begin to feel depressed again. The best advice I can give here is to take things slowly. Start with easy walking and monitor your body’s response. Do an hour of housework or shopping and see how you feel. Maybe go back to work or college for half a day and see how you do. Build up slowly over the next few weeks by resting your body, eating well, taking supplements and drinking water.

The Epstein Barr virus is a latent virus, so if you get it, it can happen again if you stress your body or exercise too much.
