Ten Tips to Transition Into Fall Fitness

If you live in a cold climate, it’s clear that the warm, maintenance-free days of 2010 are coming to an end.

The leaves are turning, the winds are getting colder, and the days are getting shorter since fall begins on September 22nd.

With the recession kicking in now it will affect many people who are able to work or choose. But there are still plenty of great ways to stay active and prepare for the cold days ahead.

Here are 10 tips to transition to fall fitness:

1 Power walk – Plan ahead for the weather and dress appropriately for a walk on a trail in the woods, even if it’s just a walk in the neighborhood.

2 Go for a bike ride – Many fall days are warm enough to go for a 20 or 30 mile bike ride, or longer if you’re an experienced rider.

3 Organize a pickup game – Whether it’s a football, basketball, or intermediate softball game, get a few people together for some friendly competition outside on some of the last nice days of the year to do in the cold.

4 Yard Work – Get some exercise while doing fall chores at a brisk pace, like raking leaves, cleaning flower beds and cleaning the house. Your space will look better, you’ll burn calories and you’ll be more productive.

5 Plan your indoor training room – Take the time to plan ahead for where you’ll be working when the weather gets tough inside – if you’re a winter gamer.

Do things like clean your workout equipment, make sure your treadmill and/or elliptical is working properly, and maybe consider adding fitness equipment to your gym.

6 Improve your diet – Take an honest look at your diet and decide if there are areas you can improve. It’s easier to get stressed in the winter months if you’re not careful, so make sure you have good habits now.

7 Get enough sleep – Get enough sleep because it will improve your health.

8 Run in a road race – Several local 5K and 10K races are held each week. This is a great way to stay in shape and stay motivated while training.

9 Go rafting – Go on a canoe, kayak or rafting trip as you soak in the autumn air.

10 Make time for yourself – If people are not careful they will burn out in the fast pace of life. Take some time for yourself to relax. Stop and smell the roses or feel the leaves crunching under your feet on a nice, comfortable fall walk.
