Osteoporosis Risk – Calcium and Vitamin D Will Not Prevent Broken Bones

For the 10 million Americans who suffer from osteoporosis and the 18 million who are thought to be at risk of developing the disease, their risk of broken bones, pain and possible death is a serious concern. In the US, some 250,000 hip fractures a year are caused by osteoporosis, and 10-20 percent of those people die within the next six months.

Ask the woman on the street what to do to prevent these problems, and most will name calcium supplements as the key. Some also mention Vitamin D. However, according to recent medical research, calcium and Vitamin D do not protect against the risk of bone loss from osteoporosis.

What is the Presentation?

Two studies in the UK medical journals Lancet and British Medical Journal indicate that calcium and Vitamin D have no role in preventing bone loss among people with osteoporosis.

In the first study, when more than 5,300 people over the age of 70 took a slow-release pill (ie, a placebo), calcium, vitamin D, or calcium and vitamin D, the incidence of bone fractures did not differ between groups.

The second study looked at 3,314 women age 70 or older who had a high risk of hip fracture. Those who took calcium and Vitamin D daily did not have a significantly different rate of fractures than those who received only information about diet and fall prevention.

What are the signs of a broken bone?

If you are concerned about the risk of bone fractures, ask your doctor to order a red blood cell count test. Remember that bones contain calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, boron, magnesium and many other minerals. Magnesium needs a combination of all those minerals to keep it going. So a test like a red blood cell mineral test, which measures a number of essential nutrients, is the best way to determine if your body has the right balance of nutrients for strong and healthy bones. .

My Mom’s Osteoporosis Story

The first time my mom had her bone density tested at age 67, the results were frightening. He had a T-score of -4.3, meaning he had severe osteoporosis in his hips and spine. The World Health Organization has defined the following T-levels:

* Normal: T-score above -1.
* Osteopenia: T-score between -1 and -2.5
* Osteoporosis: T-score or below -2.5

I ordered three more tests for my mom and the following results came back:

1. My mom’s Genetic Test came back positive and showed rapid bone loss.

2. Her Mineral Test revealed a significant deficiency of calcium and magnesium, but her calcium levels were within the normal range.

3. Her Female Hormone Tests revealed low levels of estrogen and progesterone.

Based on this information, this is the correct program that I selected for my mom:

1. Feed him with spring or filtered water (not distilled water).

2. I prescribed pregnenolone. Pregnenolone is an indicator of the production pathways of progesterone and estrogen, and has been well documented to improve levels of progesterone and estrogen without the negative effects associated with estrogen.

3. I chose calcium and magnesium.

4. I recommended weight lifting.

5. Her diet consists of 4-5 small meals per day such as: 2-3 ounces of lean protein: chicken, turkey, fish, eggs (no dairy or cheese), 1-2 servings of vegetables and 1/2. cup of approved starches: potatoes, brown rice, unleavened bread.

Results: His Bone Resorption tests showed a decrease in bone mass. His Bone Density Test showed a -1.2, a 72% improvement. This is very surprising to the physician who interprets his results.

How occupational therapy can help

My ability to help my mom (and my patients) comes from my understanding of Functional Medicine, a perspective that uses scientific research to find the specific cause of a person’s health problem, rather than prescribe standard medicine for all.

If my mother’s test results had come back differently, my prescription would have changed. Note that I did not recommend a calcium or Vitamin D supplement. He didn’t need that.
