Is It Possible To Make Your Own Medifast Meals?

Sometimes I hear people try to save money by making diets similar to Medifast. I get asked a lot if you can make your own food, and if so, how do you do it and what recipes do you use.

Honestly, I know a few people who have tried to do this but failed. There are two reasons why this task is difficult if not impossible. First, Medifast meals are very high in protein and fiber while very low in carbohydrates and sugar. Because food and grocery store foods are so cheaply made, they just don’t compare.

For example, let’s say you’re trying to make your own shake that’s like a protein bar. The company achieves the amount of protein in the shake in part by using soy protein and whey. These are specialty foods that are not cheap. If you try to make a lactose or milk shake, you may end up with more sugar and carbs. But if you decide to forego the dairy base, like Medifast, and use a high protein base, you may end up paying more for the shakes if you don’t buy in bulk. And to get the same results as if you buy from the company, you should shoot for 100 calories or less, 11 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber, and less than 9 grams of sugar.

Another example is pudding. It’s also higher in protein (14 grams) and fiber (4 grams) than any pudding you might find in the grocery store, with only 90 calories. Look at your grocery store and see if you can find a similar pudding. You can find something similar in a health food store (although I’ve never seen anything so high on the protein side,) but I’d bet it’s more expensive.

I use Medifast tablets as an example. Most of the bars you find in the grocery store are full of sugar and carbs. Some have more sugar than a candy bar. You can find high protein bars at health food stores, but they are more expensive and have more calories. The bars have only 2 grams of sugar but 11 grams of protein.

Let’s look at soups and stews. You’re looking at 100 calories but still plenty of protein, at 14 grams. Many soups in the store are high in sugar, but the Medifast product has only 1 gram. You’re unlikely to find anything like it in the supermarket, and if you try to make soup at home, you’ll need to add protein powder, which will increase your costs.

And I can’t think of a cheese, sandwich, or pancake that comes close to the nutrition, fiber, and protein in Medifast, which weighs in at less than 110 calories. However, these chocolate chip pancakes only have 4 grams of sugar while packing 11 grams of protein. Brownies and ice cream are all about the same in terms of protein to carbohydrate ratio. Also, how do you get started making your own ice cream?

I know cost is always an issue, but if you use coupons, you’re looking at just around (sometimes less) $2 per meal. I’m not sure what you do better than cooking this yourself or buying store bought food. To answer the question, I think you need to buy a lot of special items and ingredients to make your own ready meals. And I’m not sure if it’s cheaper or more effective.
