Act As the Person You Want to Be and It Will Happen
When it comes to improving yourself, there are few, if any, shortcuts. However, there is one method that can dramatically shorten the length of time it would take to become the person you want to become… act like.
Acting as means adopting the mindset of what you want to become and being able to follow (or encourage) your behavior. You bypass the “what if” and go straight to the “what is”. If you practice long enough, your acting like no longer acting as you eventually grow into your new role. Act as if you would do things you would not normally do. It will create new normal standards throughout your life, standards that are higher than what you are experiencing now. When youcannot fail, you will expand and experience things that you otherwise would not have. Life will open up to you in so many new ways.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 – 1832), the German philosopher, once wrote: “Before you can do something, you must first be something.” Act like the person you want to be. Acting as if keeps your focus on what you want to become. It keeps you confident while reducing doubts. It creates and strengthens your belief and confidence in yourself. Essentially act as if you are tricking your subconscious into accepting without question what you want to happen. To improve yourself you need to take action outside of your comfort zone, which means you need to take some risks. Taking risks naturally brings thoughts of failure and instinctively creates your subconscious fears and doubts.
If youare too afraid to take an action (eg networking at a fair, introducing yourself to a stranger, writing a proposal, etc.) ever been, and do what you would do yourself. When you feel fear building up, tell yourself “Stop!” and then go back to pretending to be that best self. Inventor Charles Kettering, who held more than 300 US patents in his lifetime, said it best: “Believe and act as if it were impossible to fail.”
When you act as if, your subconscious begins to accept your behavior, your thoughts and your feelings as natural and normal for you. This sets in motion the “Law of Normal Standard” as set forth by Thomas Troward (1847 – 1916) who wrote that it is the activity of the mind by which man attracts into his life only that which is normal to him finds, instead of what he vaguely hopes or wishes for. When you pretend, you create a new “normal” for yourself.
Someone once said, “People don’t attract what they want, but what they are.” In other words, only when you stop working on what it is you’re trying to get and start working on YOU, will you get what it is you want. Think how basic this is. To attract attractive people, you must be attractive. To attract powerful people, you must be powerful. To attract dedicated people, you must be committed. Instead of working on those around you, you should work on yourself. What you are is what you attract.
We all know someone who works very hard, diligently and makes sacrifices to try to create financial wealth. However, have they changed who they are? Until they begin to think and act like one who is rich, they will never attract the wealth they seek. Rich people don’t think and act the way they do because they are rich. They are rich because they think and act like this.
How many people are on a diet today who have no chance of losing weight, and keeping it off because they are still the same person who gained all that weight to begin with. Like rich people, thin people don’t think and act the way they do because they are thin. They are bad because they think and act like that.
To get what you want, you have to change who you are. You change who you are by changing the way you think and act. The Greek philosopher Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC) wrote: “It is easy to perform a good action, but not easy to acquire a fixed habit of performing such actions.” In other words, the first step to creating a new habit is to take action. With respect to personal improvement, this is a wonderful quote. It’s hard to form the habit, as we’ve all discovered over and over. However, to at least pretend to be good is already a habit; even if it is not will eventually make it a habit.
Act as if you’ve been skinny long enough and one day you’ll attract slimness, even though today you’re 100 pounds overweight. Act as if you are financially wealthy long enough and one day you will attract all the wealth you can imagine.
Imagine how different your life would be today if you acted as if:
· It was impossible to fail.
· You had no fears.
· What you did makes a difference (it does).
· There is enough time in the day to do what I need to do (there is).
· Everything will be alright, even if it seems like it won’t.
· Everyone loves you and can’t live without you.
· You are a blank piece of paper on which no one had written anything.
What if you act like you only have 6 months to live? How much would you achieve in those 6 months? Want to travel to places you’ve always wanted to travel? Do you want to finally tell your family and friends how much they mean to you? Want to rebuild relationships you’ve neglected? Want to mend broken relationships? Would you overcome those fears that have prevented you from experiencing all that life has to offer? Do you want to start appreciating every day to the fullest and use it to its fullest potential? Why aren’t you doing all these things now?
Acting as is a tool to help you become. It’s a way of giving yourself permission to try a new role and see if it fits. At the very least, it allows you time and space to experiment with your life and find out who you really are.
