Too Much Screen Time Does Affect Your Child’s Health – Three Effective Actions to Take

As an overweight kid, I was used to living in the shadows-the shadows of my “friends” choosing sides on the playground for basketball games, and I was never picked on. The shadows behind the open gym doors where the girls are laughing and the boys are gossiping. The dark side of me-doesn’t let my light shine-who wants to focus on this pile of flesh? The emotional pain of being a “fat girl” outweighed my physical limitations.

But by high school I had grown up, lost the baby fat, and was good enough to play on the girls basketball team. Boys still say bad things about my body-but now it’s different. I am normal weight, strong and healthy. For a little while.

Adolescence brought back the war of the stomach. Then came a depth of physical pain and sadness that I’m not sure how I got through when I look back on those years. Twenty years of serious illness followed the birth of my sons. Recovery was stressful, competing for time with my boys, and recovery time and recovery time with other treatments because traditional methods didn’t work-what was wrong with me? A lot. We went outside, rain or shine, cold or hot, always moving around the backyard even if it was just five minutes to throw dry bread to the sparrows that were looking for food inside. in five feet of the storm surge. I am so grateful now for the exercise in my childhood equation. As I get older, I don’t hate exercise like most of my friends. I hope so. It’s what saved me.

Through my own efforts and luck in finding the right health care providers I am now blessed with good health. Even though I’m not a size 8, I can walk/jog two-three miles a day, lift weights, do Yoga and Pilates and occasionally go for a five-mile walk. . I can bend and touch my toes, which some school kids can’t do.

That’s right. I was shocked when a colleague told me that 22 of her 27 preschoolers could not touch their toes. Imagine the little five-year-old bodies struggling without doing this simple task. The bad.

Most of today’s kids have too much junk food as an excuse for their junk food that is packed with calories and not eating enough food is a sad example. But another major factor in the sudden rise in childhood obesity is the amount of time young people spend in front of the television, video games or computers. It is not enough to move around throughout the day.

A typical teenager spends about 53 hours a week on television, movies, the internet, cell phones and video games. In comparison, children spend 17 hours a week with their parents and 30 hours a week at school. (1)

In 173 studies in the last three years, 86% found a significant relationship between increased media reading and increased childhood obesity. 82% of the studies concluded that more hours of media indicates an increase in weight over time. A longitudinal study of 5,493 children found that those who spent more than eight hours watching television per week at age three were more likely to be obese at age seven.

Another major study showed that a large percentage (about 36%) of American preschool children exceeded the recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to limit media time to 2 hours or less per day. (Please note: I believe the AAP should be more strict in recommending that preschool children spend no more than 30 minutes per day on TV/DVD/computer. viewing is warranted. (3)

However, at 12 months, the baby is watching nearly an hour of television a day, despite the AAP’s recommendation of no screen time before age 2.

All of this is sad news. However, there is hope on the horizon if parents take this information seriously. The daily decisions that parents make every day begin to add up along with many positive outcomes for the optimal health of children that reduce screen time and increase some other necessary work.

Change, however small, is necessary to improve children’s lives and their future health as adults.

Parents: Start today to reduce screen time and do more of:

1. The family eats together.

Kids make better food choices when they eat with mom or dad! A research study showed that families who eat together and watch television eat more fruits and vegetables than those who eat separately or eat family dinner with television. (7)

2. Exercising together as a family.

Family bike rides, hikes, walks in the local park, or other activities that support a child or teen’s need for movement are also powerful examples of celebration. exercise as an important part of everyday life.

3. Your child/teen has access to physical activity.
