Inflammatory Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is inflammation, known by some doctors and men and women who have been diagnosed with this rare cancer, who know its life.
Women who know how to check for breast cancer will tell you that they check for lumps. That’s what we were told to do. That, plus an annual mammogram.
But IBC is among us, and has been for a long time. It is a rare form of breast cancer, and the need for education on this matter should be widely publicized. Because when a woman realizes it, and sometimes men realize it, the symptoms rear their ugly heads, it means they are in the most advanced stage.
How do I know? I learned the hard way.
My healthy 37 year old athletic daughter just passed away. In just a few months she went from knowing she was perfectly healthy, to the reality that IBC had invaded her body. My daughter has accused me of writing about this type of cancer. Let’s get the word out to women and men about this untold cancer, IBC. Did he qualify? Not the kind we’re all told to watch. He has shared the following facts to explain what happened in his case.
“I’ve been working out for 8 months, with a trainer. All the other women in my training class are fit and trim, but I’m gaining weight and seem to have built up muscles in my arms, legs and chest. 2003 I decided to stop weights and exercises and tried to lose some of the pounds, which I did very quickly.
That’s why I noticed that the shape of my right breast has changed, it’s bigger than my left. Being right-handed, I thought that lifting weights and dropping weights caused this strange feeling.
In May I noticed that the right breast was harder than the left, but there was no lump, no pain, nothing to indicate what I had been told all my life to watch out for. It’s beautiful, this slanted shape I see in the mirror.
I started looking for a Doctor in the small town I moved to a year ago. By the time I found someone who took my insurance, it was September and the first day of my vacation. I saw a nurse who took one look at my enlarged right side and immediately ordered a mammogram and ultrasound that same day. I will never forget the woman who took the scans. He said, Oh, he’s done.
The next day I saw a doctor who did a deep biopsy, a needle biopsy and a skin biopsy. Before he got the results back he told me it was cancer. He walked out of the room and started making phone calls, then came back and told me I had to go to the Oncologist in the morning.
The doctor took a biopsy and told me I had breast cancer. After years in nursing school and medical training, I had never heard of IBC. I learned that day how to attack this rare type of cancer, I was diagnosed with stage 4.
I was scheduled the next day for surgery to implant a portable catheter into my left chest wall and I said I was going to have a PET scan next week to see if the cancer has spread to other parts of my body. The scan came back positive for the right arm lymph nodes and my liver. Chemotherapy was scheduled to be modified to attack the liver itself. On October 3rd I started the first round of high doses of cancer fighting drugs, six painful hours of IV bags dripping into a portable catheter, Herceptin, Taxol, and Carboplatin.”
My daughter was told by several medical staff, “Why did you wait so long?” That is the reason for this writing. The reason is because we are not talking about the symptoms of this type of cancer fast. If you go looking for information about IBC you will find articles, articles and support groups from many women around the world who learned about IBC the hard way. And many Doctors will treat a patient like my daughter with antibiotics before they know what is in front of them.
The word INSLAMMATORY indicates a disease common to the layman. You ask yourself, if this was me, I know I might have breast cancer. Before that day in September my daughter called me and I said no, maybe there is an infection in the milk duct or something. If there is no deposit we are told to find, your mind will not enter if you do not know the IBC.
THINK! Not only is October breast cancer awareness month, but always. Ask your Doctor, put it in a search engine, read it. Know what the symptoms are.
From the articles and research papers I’ve read until my eyes burn, I’ve found people with this rare disease offering help and emotional support. They also argued that public awareness of this disease should be put on the front page, not at the bottom of the list.
There are many statistics about the incidence of breast cancer, how to treat it, how to diagnose it and why chemotherapy, removal of the breast, then radiation is needed. Breast cancer is an inflammatory disease that has been around for many years, but because of its rarity, it’s rarely talked about. BUT IT HAS TO BE DONE.
The age at which women get it varies, but from the authors’ research it seems that this affects women and some men in their fertile years. As the name implies Inflammation, many doctors are disappointed when the mammogram comes back clear, and even sometimes, the biopsy comes back. The patient knows something is not right, and in many cases relies only on his Doctor for guidance. But there it is stuck in the system, for unknown reasons. Researchers say it is not hereditary.
In one case in Castro Valley California, 3 women were diagnosed with IBC, and they all worked in the same place. The Doctor who treated these women has cried to ask for funds to find the cause of this accident, because they all worked in the laboratory for almost a year. However, because IBCs are so rare, funding has not come quickly.
