The Only Real Cure For Irritable Bowel Syndrome
In this article I will talk about irritable bowel syndrome especially IBS-D which is manifested in the bowels, diarrhea and constipation. I’m not talking about IBS-C that only manifests itself in bloating and constipation.
If you’ve landed on this page because you’re like the millions of others who are trying to self-diagnose your condition, you may be looking for therapy. I must warn you in advance, although I have knowledge that I am not a medical professional, you should always consult a doctor before starting any kind of medicine, even if it is simple.
In this article I will cover my 10 year battle with IBS and how I found a medication that worked. Everyone has a different story about IBS-D but as far as I can see, we all have the same thing. I’m going to talk about this in the next few pages but I want to start by telling you a little bit about myself.
About 10 years ago I was a young university graduate and I decided to join a career that seemed exciting at first with endless possibilities. It didn’t take long for me to realize that this job is very demanding and requires 24 hours of hard work. I didn’t have a problem with working hard but I did have a problem with my work environment. Many people at work are sad, anxious, afraid of each other and constantly testing their bodies to the end. It usually means being overweight, eating poorly and feeling like you’re not in control of your life. My work is my life, I have no life.
Within a few months I started going to work and going straight to the bathroom. As anyone who suffers from IBS-D knows this is actually diarrhea. No matter what I eat or drink I always feel sick. It’s not unusual for me to go to the bathroom three or four times a day with very little food and constant diarrhea.
In the morning I used the feeling and why I didn’t think about it. When I eat I don’t feel good until I go to have my bowels removed and then I feel good. Along with the diarrhea my body lost so much water that I didn’t have time to replace it so I felt like a dried up bran. I continued to do this to my body for over 5 years hoping that I would find something better to do in my career and finally stop doing this.
It never went away in my 6 years of sudden IBS-D from where I started having periods followed immediately by diarrhea. It happens 5-10 times a day and I have to run to the bathroom, like I’m about to poop. This made it difficult to be productive in my work and then created a vicious cycle that caused my IBS-D to spiral out of control.
I suddenly thought I had cancer and said I read everything online about the disease matching my symptoms. I found quite a few so self analysis is not a wise idea. I went to my doctor and we discussed a course of antibiotics as he thought I might have had an infection after an episode of food poisoning.
This didn’t work for long and I soon went back to him to ask for a deeper exam. This started with a breath test to rule out food allergies and went through multiple blood tests to rule out ulcers, colitis, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, and more. upper and lower ends. All this backfired. I was finally diagnosed with severe IBS-D. One of the ways I was happy to know that I didn’t have colon cancer but at the same time I was saddened to think that IBD has no cure.
The next chapter in my life is going through a long list of medications in hopes that they will resolve this issue. Now I want to tell you about the drugs I took, there are many people out there who rave about some of these drugs and what they have done for them. That’s great because everyone’s body is different and what works for you may not work for me.
I speak for countless patients all over the world who have tried everything under the sun and never found a cure. Now here is the list of the drugs I tried and the results next to them.
Fiber (unhelpful) Worse
Pre & Probiotics (unhelpful) At first it looks good but it stops working
Drinking a lot of water (doesn’t help) made things worse
Eliminating food (doesn’t work) Certain foods like cheese, chocolate, spices made my IBS worse but eliminating all triggers didn’t solve the issues.
Anti Spasmodic (ineffective) There are many types of candles but they are all ineffective
Imodium (doesn’t work) It helps a little with the diarrhea but doesn’t make it worse
Tri Cyclic Anti Depressant (uneffective) An effective depressant at first but wears off quickly
Hypnotherapy (doesn’t work) It’s very intuitive and relaxing but it’s not enough
At this point the GI specialist was out of ideas and I was left to suffer on my own.
I did hundreds of hours of research and found the answer. In Islam we believe that for every disease God has made a cure so go find it.
These are my thoughts on IBS-D;
IBS-D won’t kill you, it can be treated easily and there’s nothing really wrong with you
IBS-D is a functional disorder that is 99% caused by stress whether consciously or unconsciously
IBS-D can only be treated by addressing the cause behind the problem, not the problem itself
IBS-D affects people mostly in the Western world, and because of the 24/7 lifestyle and social pressures that affect people beyond the border, and often mild anxiety or depression is rejected.
So the magic bullet you’ve been waiting for worked for me, and if my theory is correct it should work 100% and not fail for true IBS-D sufferers.
First you have to accept that you have IBS-D because you are under stress consciously or unconsciously, and this is your body’s way of warning you that enough is enough.
I spoke to my GP and asked for Venlafaxine XL which is an SNRI antidepressant. I choose this because one of its side effects is constipation; is a powerful sedative and reduces visceral hyperactivity.
In 6 months at 150mg per day I am 100% cured of the symptoms of IBS-D.
So how did it work? It’s simple; the vicious cycle of stress breaks, followed by diarrhea followed by diarrhea. I don’t have to worry every time I go out if I have food poisoning or where the nearest bathroom is. I just let myself get on with life without worrying about IBS, and finally I stop worrying about IBS, and that’s it.
Everyone reacts differently to different medications so experiment to see which one works best for you. While you are on them you can try to use hypnotherapy to make sure that if you remove the stress you will break the cycle. Your thoughts control your gut. Controlling your thoughts can help you manage IBS but as I said before hypnotherapy is useless on its own.
The only drug I used while coming off Venlafaxine was a benzodiazepine called Alprazolem, brand name XANAX. In the UK this is not prescribed on the NHS so you have to get it by private prescription. This drug can be dangerous but if you like to control yourself this is a good drug to use in the right way. One tablet 0.5 mg I say what is IBS? You should be very careful not to increase your dose or develop a habit for this drug. You should also know that he can develop patience, so you should start increasing your activities. Use it as if it were to be used as a treatment for IBS, not as a recreational activity for your pleasure and there is no problem.
In the end I want to finish by saying that if I didn’t have God in my life I would be long gone. Now I have my life back without IBS-D. God has always given me hope to never give up on seeking treatment and to start by understanding your situation. So don’t make the same mistake I did and waste decades of your life before realizing that we are all human and we all have our broken parts. If you are past that breaking point and your body is telling you a certain way, listen to your body.
