It’s Not All Allergies, It’s Seasonal Change Too!
Spring is here! Your eyes are itchy, your nose is runny, you feel irritable – must be allergies, right? Not urgent! In most cases I have seen, in the early spring here in New England, the seasonal change from winter to spring tends to cause an excess heat condition that dries out the eyes and sinuses internally, resulting in allergy-like symptoms.
Let me explain.
Your body needs to get used to generating more heat in the winter compared to the summer. This natural ability develops through the fall, but when spring arrives, a warming trend develops and your body must now reduce its heat production to maintain a balance in healthy body temperature. I have an analogy for you… think of the body as a wood stove. To keep the house warm on a cold winter day, say it’s 20 degrees outside, you have to put a lot of wood in the wood stove to heat the house. The same happens with the body which needs more heat in winter. Well, when spring comes along with warmer days, say only 40 or 50 degrees, if you continue to put the same amount of wood in the wood stove to heat the house. Again, the same with the body, but the body is slow to change. When the body overheats in the spring, body heat rises to the head and dries out the soft and moist tissue found on the eyes and in the sinuses, leading to itching and irritation.
This excess heat also heats us up internally and makes us feel irritable, just as if you were sitting in a too hot room and feeling uncomfortable. Your body takes time to change – slow and slow wins the race, but here in Rhode Island the erratic weather patterns stress our health. As the saying goes, if you don’t like the weather, just wait.
Now I say, this is less about allergies, and more about seasonality. Suddenly, in early spring, people come to my clinic and explode with allergy-like symptoms, but where is the explosion of allergens? For example, where is the pollen? There are no major blooms in early spring, other than in late spring (June) when the oak trees release their greenish-yellow pollen that covers everything in sight – release the Kraken!
So what can we do? We need to clear heat in the body to bring balance to seasonal change as the days get warmer. This is difficult because the temperatures go up and down throughout the spring.
My suggestion is to focus on the fundamentals – sleep and diet and if things get acute, get some acupuncture and natural herbal medicine. Sleep helps to cool the body and rejuvenate the body. Poor sleep needs to be addressed if you want to get to the root of the problem before you run off to get some hard medicine to dry up your post-nasal drip. Although, if you need a quick fix, there are all natural herbal formulas like what I call “nose pills” in my clinic, which can be gentler and very helpful. Acupuncture can also be useful to remove heat, relax the body and restore natural balance.
In addition, eating more heat clearing foods such as salads, and fruits and vegetables such as apples, pears, cucumbers, asparagus, lettuce and celery can remove heat. Also avoid heat by avoiding long-cooked and reheated winter foods such as stews and roasts that energetically require a lot of heat to prepare. Long-cooked food is very hot for the body and should be eaten less in the spring and summer. Also cut back on starches and sources of sugar that can lead to inflammation and weight gain. Eating less and losing a few pounds can also help.
It is interesting to note that in many cultures and traditions such as during Lent, fasting is part of the tradition – fasting not only weighs less on your mind, but also has an uplifting effect on your energy which is very supportive for your health. There are different types of fasting and it’s not right for everyone, so make sure you seek professional help before trying any big changes in your diet.
If you are interested in an all-natural solution to your health, consider contacting the clinic and asking for a free consultation to learn more. Learning about traditional nutrition can restore balance and bring greater happiness and healthier living to you and your family.
