Exclusive – Interview With Brenda Watson – Author of The Fiber 35 Diet
Recently, I interviewed Mrs. Brenda Watson CNC about her new book, the Fiber 35 Diet. He is knowledgeable and well versed in alternative medicine.
KJ: Why did you write the Fiber 35 Diet?
BW: The Fiber 35 Diet is my fourth book. Before publishing I was a self-published author, focusing on digestive disorders with Dr. Leonard Smith.
I have always known about the benefits of fiber in food. Between the ages of 42 and 48 I gained weight, even though I was into naturopathy.
BW: Fiber-rich foods have been shown to be the best. I eat too much protein. So, I did a lot of research on fiber. People don’t count fiber. Dr. Dennis Burkett traveled to Africa to study the African diet, which has 60-80g of fiber per day. The natives there no longer have digestive problems, hemorrhoids, heart disease, varicose veins, bowel problems, diverticulitis, diabetes…. Americans should count their fiber intake.
BW: The average fiber supplement provides 3-5g. I didn’t eat all the grains. So, I started counting the grams of fiber I ate.
35g is needed for good health. A study at the University of California showed that more CCK is produced after eating a high-fiber diet, as it is after eating a high-fat diet.
My personal life changed with the influence of fiber. The effect of fiber on average is 7 calories taken for every gram of fiber consumed. Most Americans eat 10 to 12 grams of fiber per day, consuming 70-84 calories. This should be increased to 35g of fiber per day. Fewer calories are involved this way.
BW: I also made the mistake of not weighing myself. It is good to do this once or twice a week.
KJ: I rarely do this.
BW: You should have a list of calories for your body weight to get an idea of your required caloric intake. You can follow a method to determine your appropriate caloric intake in the book Fiber 35 Diet. I also outline how many daily activities will burn calories. Most importantly, count fiber grams not calories.
It is also important to read food labels. Don’t buy anything under 3 grams of fiber per serving. For example, a whole grain wrap needs 3-7 grams of fiber. Multigrain does not mean whole grain.
KJ: Who do you think your audience is?
BW: Female, 35 and older
KJ: What major health problems do you believe Americans face due to a lack of fiber?
BW: $120 billion is spent on health care for digestive problems each year.
Increasing fiber reduces: heart disease, diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, reflux and GERD, to name a few.
KJ: You say in the introduction that 35 grams of fiber a day helps with weight loss and reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer.
Fiber 35–What is 35 grams of fiber per day?
Breakfast–7 grams of oranges, 8 grams of finely chopped whole rather than whole
Lunch– 10g salad of romaine, spinach, walnuts, beans and chicken
Snack– 4g hummus (2T), with celery and carrot or flax crackers
Dinner– salmon, 11g squash and kale
The total is around 35g-40g of fiber.
KJ: That’s easy!
BW: People want options. The health food store has shakes with fiber and protein in them, and fiber snacks are good too.
KJ: What are the best sources of fiber?
BW: Raw vegetables and whole grains. Read the labels. People who suffer from indigestion should eat their vegetables.
KJ: Which food is our enemy?
BW: Sugar and processed foods.
KJ: Until recently, cancer was the worst word I heard every day. Today is a word of the day. From your point of view, what are the top “must dos” for cancer prevention?
BW: Switch off and eat an organic, plant-based diet. A special program that uses herbs, detoxification, water, fiber, and an infrared sauna should be followed. The infrared sauna is widely used by all doctors in clinics and is very safe. An infrared sauna produces a lot of heat, and the heat causes sweating; heavy metals and other toxins cause the patient to sweat.
KJ: I know you struggled with health issues several years ago.
BW: About 20 years ago. I became interested in naturopathy and became a semi-healer.
In 1990 I started training clinics and from 1993-1998 I did 5 clinics in total.
KJ: I read that you are also a Naturopathic Doctor. How is naturopathy different from mainstream medicine?
BW: Herbs and neutricuticals are studied, ie. vitamins and antioxidants.
KJ: Are you part of alternative medicine?
BW: Well, Dr. Leonard Smith, an associate professor at the University of Miami, and I worked together on the whole project. We aim to educate the patient using a holistic approach.
KJ: Has alternative medicine gone global?
BW: Yes, but the media is still behind on this topic. In New York City for example, the media is generally less informed.
KJ: Today’s consumers know that organic foods are better than pesticides. Some people just can’t afford it. Any recommendations for this group?
BW: Buy vegetable washes for fruits; use natural household products like vinegar and baking soda.
A study called Toxic Body Burden was completed using workers. The maximum number of toxins in each person is 91. Our bodies do not detoxify as well as we think.
Recently, the banning of the dry cleaning solvent perchlorethylene (perc) has been made illegal in California. Substances known to be carcinogens and linked to cancer, esophagus and other cancers. Several people living in a building above a dry cleaning business are found dead, and an investigation is launched.
KJ: When you were writing the Fiber 35 Diet, how much research did you do?
BW: 2 years worth
KJ: The book says there are 3 parts to a person. Phase 1 and 2 lose weight through fiber and exercise. Phase 3 is a life-saving program.
How long are part 1 and 2?
BW: Phase 1 is about 1-2 weeks and Phase 2 is 1 month.
None are under 1200 calories.
KJ: Should the colony be cleaned? If so, why?
BW: It’s not always the case, it’s necessary when an individual dies. People need to exercise their bowels every day, and very efficiently.
During menstruation, I recommend a 7 day or 14 day cleanse. Obesity affects the ability to lose weight. It slows down the metabolic rate, stops eating too much, and leads to self-poisoning.
KJ: What makes your cookbook different from others?
BW: Fiber 35 Good food, not fancy, well researched, easy. Most meals can be assembled in less than 30 minutes and I post a grocery list once a week. It’s a no-brainer.
Health and exercise are also important.
On my PBS special I recommend a 20 minute upper and lower body workout DVD. Similar routines are included in the Fiber 35 Diet book. It uses resistance bands that can be used by people with neck and back issues.
