There is no harm in us. Our body needs calories for energy. But eating too many calories — and not burning them through exercise — can lead to weight loss. Therefore, the need to know which foods have how many calories, that is, which foods give the body a lot of energy.

Most foods and drinks contain calories. Some foods, such as iceberg lettuce, are lower in calories. (A cup of shredded lettuce has less than 10 calories.) Even other foods, like roasted peanuts, are high in calories. (A half cup of peanuts has about 427 calories.)

Simple measurements and their meaning-

1 kilo joule(kj) = 1000 joules

1 kilo calories = 1000 grams calories

1 calorie = 4.18 kj

1 g fat= 9 calories=38 kj

1 g carbohydrate = 4 calories = 17 KJ

1 g protein = 4 Cal = 17 kJ

The above method means that if you know the number of grams of each nutrient (read fat, protein or carbohydrates) in the food, you can calculate the total calories. You multiply the number of grams by the number of calories in a gram of that food portion.

For example, if a serving of french fries has 10 grams of fat (about 10 fries) this means 10 grams of fat x 9 calories per gram = 90 calories from fat . Easy!

We should aim to eat a healthy, balanced diet that provides plenty of calories – not too many and not too few!
