Carb Cycling – Hollywood’s Best Kept Secret Diet?

What is the best low carb diet plan? Of all the diets out there (Atkins, South Beach etc.) what is the most effective? After spending a lot of time learning about nutrition and fitness, I’ve come across a diet that people at my gym swear by when I ask. According to my fitness instructor, Hollywood also swears. A new twist on the traditional low-carbohydrate-high-protein diet and fat-loss technique is called ‘carbohydrate cycling’. Also called ‘carb cycling’, ‘zig, zag diet’, and ‘Hi-low’ diet.

How It Works

Our body is programmed to respond to starvation. This means that when we eat less our body thinks it will burn less later and goes into starvation mode. In a state of starvation, our body burns less because it thinks there is no fire. This is why low carb dieters hit a plateau when they go low carb for a period of time.

Carb Cycling (I like to call it CC) is the most effective way to trick our bodies into not going into starvation mode. In the CC diet, you lower your carbs for a few days and then increase them again before your body knows what to do! CC is based on the concept of alternating low carb days with high carb days instead of keeping carbs low all the time. The beauty of this diet is that it takes the fat loss benefits of a low carb diet but eliminates all the low carb side effects! It keeps the metabolism rate up and prevents your body from going into starvation mode.

The Game Plan

Low carbs for three straight days will fill you up on the fourth day. When carb-loading on day four, your energy level will remain the same, and your fat-burning ability will increase rapidly. On my lean days, I eat my carbs at my first two or three meals (which includes snacks) and I eat very little carbs. (Half a cup of brown rice) After 4pm I eat a lot of protein and carbohydrates (salads, greens etc)

On my big day, I just eat whatever I want (no sweets or soda). Here I eat a lot of starchy carbs like French fries, Chinese fried rice, mashed potatoes and gravy etc. Not only do I fill up on the carbs I need but I also benefit from three days of low carb. After losing 20 pounds and shaving 11 points on my body fat percentage, I am convinced that this is the fastest way to lose weight and the easiest way. =)
