New Year’s Resolutions: We Make Em, We Break Em

97% of people who make New Year’s resolutions give up within 30 days. With a failure rate like that, why should I bother? Is there a secret to successfully keeping my resolutions? Maybe I should resolve to get stronger, exercise less, develop bad habits, procrastinate, and watch more TV in the new year. I might be able to keep such resolutions.

No, that is not the answer. Let’s resolve to do something in the new year that will make us better as people and make the world better. Here are four simple tips to make keeping those resolutions easier:

1) Start with small steps – Don’t set out to lose 30 pounds. Decide to skip dessert once a week and work out once a week. After these small changes become a habit, implement bigger changes and increase your working time. Small successes motivate you to move forward. If your goals are too high, you will die if you fail. Start small and work your way up to bigger and better things over time.

2) Be specific – Don’t set general goals. If you decide to make your partner better this year, there are no plans; so it may not happen. Think of something special that your spouse would like you to do for them (like a back rub at the end of the day, picking up their underwear, or taking out the trash without asking) . Resolve to make an effort to do it every time. Small changes can change your relationship. Little things mean a lot.

3) Be responsible. We all need someone to check us out. Knowing that someone will ask how I’m doing motivates me to work towards the goal. Tell your partner what you plan to do and ask them to check in with you every week. You are more likely to work hard when you expect to report on your progress.

4) Choose to do something worthwhile. If you decide to eat more liver this year, walk 5 miles and do 300 sit-ups a day, what happiness will you get? Set goals that give you a sense of satisfaction with the outcome. Decide to do something you enjoy and you want to keep doing it.

Here’s a resolution you can easily keep this year. Encourage a sick child in 2007. A small walk takes only a moment and costs nothing. The reward is knowing that you have brought more joy into the life of a suffering little one. Go to the HUGS and HOPE website (http://www.hugsandhope.org) and read about the children there. Choose a child and send them a happy email or postcard. That’s all there is to it. Here’s a goal you can achieve: Make it big this year — one smile at a time. Stay in the 3% and succeed in keeping the resolutions this year. And one of the videos you make is your own!
