Fun Exercising Ideas To Get Your Kids ACTIVE!

My kids don’t see how they exercise; they like to call it ‘boot camp’. Adults, we know ‘boot camp’ can be a tough and mind-bending process! Anyway, my kids… they love the sentence. So come up with your own words that your kids will love… try to avoid the word ‘work’. Listed below are things my kids love to do in boot camp and hopefully yours will too!

1. Walk! Walking is the best exercise… we can do it anywhere, anytime, wearing anything! Check out the list below where the walk takes place:

• Kids love technology right?! So, get the MAPMYFITNESS App on your smart phones that allows kids to track their steps, duration, calories, speed, and more. go and go. By the way, this app also works for bikes, running, cleaning the house, mowing the lawn and many other things! Or, use a walker, and see how many steps the kids take… each week, try to improve the steps or get the same number of steps in a shorter amount of time.

• Walk the dog around the neighborhood! Kids love dogs… and when you want a change of scenery, go to the park or nature park. Not only will the kids love it and enjoy the fresh air, but so will your dog! On the nature trail, what animals do you see? Kids forget they’re moving!

• Walk or Run for Love – 1K Kid Race (or 3K family walk); by participating in this event, you are giving back to the community and this is a great experience for your child! Be sure to train for a walk or run a week or two in advance!

• Be reckless when you travel; jump for a block, then take small or large steps, or walk like a child’s favorite animal… have fun!

• During family or holiday gatherings… walk after dinner. Even most seniors can take a short walk, so everyone gets some fresh air! If your family is quiet, get a good old football, basketball, baseball or other game going… it’s good competition in the family and everyone will work harder!

2. Water! One word ‘FUN’!

• What kid doesn’t like to swim?! And this is a great activity because it works most of your muscles, it’s easy on their joints and it’s a fun outdoor activity to do in the hot weather! Race to the other side of the pool, if they’re old enough, play volleyball or basketball in the pool, or make up your own game!

• How to set up a lawnmower; Kids can play in the water for hours! This is an easy family activity and often makes for lots of laughs and great memories!

• How about going to the canal and trying to catch fish, frogs, pond tad? Or visit a large body of water (rivers, lakes) where your family can paddle and stay in the wilderness all day!

3. Challenges! Who doesn’t like a challenge?

• Create a fitness challenge, whether it’s a walking or running challenge, a sports challenge, or better yet, an Innocent Challenge. Create a reward system, maybe bi-weekly (to keep their interest) every time they reach a certain level, so they can see the goal as possible. If your child has friends or family you can compete with, your motivation will increase!

4. Activities! It’s no joke that kids love to do chores when they’re young, and then chores become less fun! Even if they want to, join…

• Gardening: digging, planting, or picking vegetables, hoping that when they collect enough, they will help clean the vegetables and then eat them!

• Work in the yard: plant bushes and flowers, push the lawnmower (or help each other), rake the grass or leaves… just keep busy outside! They love the helper, even if you delay!

• Washing the cars: whether it’s washing the car (or the floor!), washing the dirt off the car, or drying it, the kids will be sweaty after that!

• Organize and clean rooms – lifting, carrying and moving furniture out of the house; who better to help!

5. Team, Individual & Family Sports!

• Organized games and sports can fill your evenings and weekends with games and activities, which are important for building teamwork and playfulness. Get your child involved in sports and celebrate it!

• If your child prefers to play alone, look into karate, gymnastics, dance or swimming.

• Remember other sports… frisbee to skateboarding to horseback riding can be fun and exercise for your child. Let them know which things they like best.

• Family Sports Night… for example, create a family sports card. Each family chooses a card and does the same exercise until all the cards are ‘played’. Also, cards can be purchased from fitdeck.com

6. Adult Activities, we know that children like to do their parents’ activities!

• Flexibility: Show your children how to stretch their muscles. Let them do the stretching for you. Correct their behavior when needed so they learn good habits and know a way to do stretching that is most effective.

• Stress: Many children are sensitive to stress. 7. Simple games: When your child’s friend comes over to play… avoid playing time in front of the TV or computer. But play these games:

• Tag, You, Hide or Seek, Hopscotch or Jump rope.

• Be creative… build an obstacle course or a fort… let your imagination run wild!

• All board games, with rules that make kids active!

• If the kids have to watch TV (because it’s a great show), then see how many sit-ups, push-ups, squats, jumps on one leg, etc. they can do. in TV commercials… it turns into a competition!

8. Dance! Shake your fortune!

• Turn up the volume… and Dance, Dance, Dance! Most kids love to dance, so it’s time to dance. Move the objects to fit, and the video camera will appear!
