The keto diet has really taken off in the last year and a half, and for good reason. It’s a great way to shed those unwanted pounds fast, but it’s also a great way to get healthy and stay that way. Ever since we can remember we have been taught that the only way to lose weight is to stop eating the foods full of fat that we are used to eating every day. So by advising people to eat healthy fats (the key word is Healthy) you will understand why some people are confused about how and why they should eat more fat to lose weight and fast. This theory applies to everything we know about weight loss.

How Keto Started – Endocrinologist Rollin Woodyatt discovered in 1921 that 3 water-soluble compounds Aceture, B-hydroxybutyrate and Acetoacetate (collectively known as Ketone bodies) were produced by the liver due to starvation or if a person follows a diet rich in high fat and very little carbohydrates. Later that year a man from the Mayo Clinic named Russel Wilder called it the “Ketogenic Diet,” and he used it to treat epilepsy in young children with great success. . My Family Started Keto – I started Keto February 28th 2018, I tried the Keto Diet once before 6 months ago but I couldn’t do it in the first week. The first week on Keto is the worst part of the whole process, and this is when the dreaded Keto Flu, also known as the carbon flu, occurs. Keto Flu is a natural reaction your body has when it switches from burning glucose (sugar) to burning fat. Many people who have gone on the Keto diet say it feels like getting rid of a toxic substance. This can be anywhere between 3 days to a whole week, just a few days in my case.

People who have suffered from keto flu report drowsiness, pain, nausea, numbness, and other things. The first week is when people who try the Keto diet fail and fail, just remember that this happens to everyone at the beginning of the process and if you can make it through the first week already the hard part is over. There are a few remedies that you can use to help you in this bad situation. Taking Electrolyte supplements, staying hydrated, drinking bone broth, eating plenty of food and getting plenty of sleep. Keto Flu is a serious condition that can affect everyone when the body gets rid of the daily foods. You just have to be strong.

What is a Ketogenic Diet? – When the average person eats food with carbohydrates, the body takes those carbohydrates and turns them into glucose for fuel. Glucose is the body’s fuel source while carbohydrates are stored in the body, on a Keto diet there is very little if the carbohydrates are used up the body is able to use other forms of energy in order for the body to function properly. This is where healthy fats come in, and in the absence of carbohydrates the liver takes the fatty acids from the body and turns them into ketone bodies.

A good Keto diet should include:

• 70-80% Fat

• 20-25% Protein

• 5-10% Carbs

You should not eat more than 20 grams of carbohydrates per day to maintain a Ketogenic diet. I consumed less than 10 grams per day for a very intense experience but I achieved my first goals and then some. I lost 28 lbs. in less than 3 weeks.

What is Ketosis? – When the body burns fat it enters a state called “Ketosis,” which is a natural state for the body. After the removal of sugars and bad fats from the body in the first two weeks, the body has access to healthy fats. Ketosis has many benefits-related to rapid weight loss, health or performance. In some conditions such as type 1 diabetes, extreme ketosis can be very harmful, while in some cases it can be combined with intermittent fasting and can be very beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes. is managed for this purpose by Dr. Jason Fung MD (Nephrologist) of the Intensive Dietary Management Program.

What I can and can’t eat – For someone new to Keto it can be very difficult to stick to a low-carb diet, even though fat is the cornerstone of this diet you should not eat the all types of fat. Healthy fats are important, but what are healthy fats you may ask. Healthy fats include grass-fed meats, (lamb, beef, goat, pork), wild-caught fish and seafood, pastured pork and chicken. Unsalted eggs and cereals can also be taken. Stay away from starchy vegetables, fruits, and grains. Processed foods are not allowed in any shape or form on the Ketogenic diet, and sweets and dairy can be a big problem.

I am currently 5 weeks in and down 34 lbs. and in a good mood, I have a lot of energy and don’t crash at noon when I used to work. It takes hard work and a good diet plan to get you where you want to be in health. But the way there gets better every time you stop.
