Prevent Obesity-Related Diabetes

Prevent obesity-related diabetes from invading your body if you are obese or overweight. If you are overweight, your chances of getting type 2 diabetes are 7 times a normal person, if you are obese, you are 20-40 times more likely to develop obesity-related diabetes if you continue to live as you are now do

The good news is that you can prevent obesity-related diabetes from occurring, because 9 cases out of 10 can be prevented if an overweight or obese person takes some simple steps such as; lose weight, get some exercise, shift to a healthy diet, and don’t smoke. When you are obese, glucose (the type of sugar that our cells depend on for most of their energy needs) floats around your bloodstream, and when it is prevented from entering the cells, diabetes occurs.

Obesity-related diabetes begins when cells (especially muscles) stop responding to insulin’s open-for-glucose signal. The body responds by making extra amounts of insulin (within the body’s intricate mechanisms to control blood sugar). Eventually, the insulin-secreting beta cells of the pancreas become exhausted and begin to fail.

That means if you are overweight or obese, you are probably pre-diabetic. By changing your lifestyle to include weight loss, exercise and dietary changes, you can prevent pre-diabetes from turning into type 2 diabetes, and you can also bring your blood levels back to normal levels. Genetic inheritance takes a back seat to behavior

and lifestyle factors.

Information from several clinical trials strongly supports the idea that you can prevent type 2 diabetes. Diabetes Prevent Program had verified that weight loss and increased exercise reduced the conversion from pre-diabetes to type 2 diabetes by 58%.

The steps necessary to prevent obesity-related diabetes, as well as to reduce the chances of developing heart disease and some cancers include:

– Weight loss:

Losing 7-10% of current weight can halve the chance of developing obesity-related diabetes

– Increased insulin use:

Working your muscles more often and making them work harder improves their ability to use insulin and absorb glucose. You don’t need long periods of hot, sweaty exercise, studies suggest that 1/2 hour of brisk walking each day reduces the risk of developing obesity-related diabetes by 30%

Making the necessary changes in diet:

There are 2 important dietary changes that can greatly reduce the risk of obesity-related diabetes development, these changes are:

1- Consume foods with low glycemic index instead of foods with high glycemic index:

Highly processed carbohydrates such as white bread, white rice, mashed potatoes, donuts and many breakfast foods have a high glycemic index, meaning they cause persistent spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels. They emphasize the body’s insulin-making machinery predisposing it to insulin resistance which is followed by beta-cell failure.

Low glycemic index foods such as; whole grains, most beans and nuts, and whole grain breakfast cereals, are not digested and absorbed with the same ease of high glycemic index foods, causing a lower and slower increase in blood sugar and insulin, thus reducing the effort required to insulin .

2- Choose good fats and avoid bad fats:

It was recently found that the type of fat in your diet can have effects on the development of type 2 diabetes. Good fats such as those found in salmon, tuna, liquid vegetable oils, and many nuts can help prevent type 2 diabetes.

Trans fats do the opposite and that is why they are bad fats. Any product that says “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil” on the label, fried foods in most fast food restaurants, packaged baked foods, and many margarine brands are examples of foods that contain bad fats.

Stop smoking if you smoke:

Smokers are 50-90% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

Simply, stay lean and active to avoid obesity-related diabetes.
