Sauna Versus Steam Room – What is the Difference?
Saunas and steam rooms are often referred to in the same context indicating that they are similar. This is a common but inaccurate misconception and one that will be corrected here.
Both saunas and steam rooms have many health benefits and these benefits are generally reaped by raising the temperature of the human body to encourage the opening of pores and the sweating process. Most medical professionals and fitness trainers agree that there are health benefits to subjecting the human body to this type of environment for short periods of time.
The potential benefits of this “artificial” increase in body temperature include, improvement in blood circulation, skin and body detoxification, muscle tension relief, skin cleansing and a general relaxed state of the body.
The difference
The main difference between a sauna and a steam room is the way the body’s temperature is raised.
A sauna producing dry heat with low humidity that sees temperatures above 80 degrees Celsius. This temperature sounds very high, but with almost no humidity in the air, it is tolerable and causes the body to sweat profusely. This sweating process is encouraged by the lack of humidity which allows the air in the sauna to absorb any moisture (ie sweat) that is released into it.
A steam room works in a completely different way and uses much lower temperatures combined with very high humidity to make the body feel hot and sweaty. A steam room usually runs at about 40 degrees celsius, but the high humidity (which makes it harder for the body to sweat) makes it feel hotter.
Simply put, a sauna uses very hot dry air, while a steam room uses a combination of heat and moisture to create a very humid environment.
Another big difference between the two systems relates to how saunas and steam rooms are installed and used.
Saunas see their users sit on wooden benches and usually take repeated sauna sessions separated by short “cool down” periods. Saunas can accommodate multiple people depending on their size and design. The walls of the sauna are usually lined with seasoned wood and a “kitchen-style” heater provides the energy source. “Dry” heat comes from “hot” stones placed on the stove.
On the other hand, steam baths tend to be used for one session and individual bathing. Cubicles are sealed to make them airtight and moisture-proof and showers will be tiled or manufactured from encapsulated plastic material. A steam generator is used to create a moist and humid atmosphere, although “real steam” (which would be 100 degrees Celsius) is never used.
Which is the best?
There is no definitive answer as to whether a steam room or a sauna is better. Both achieve the same sensation, but in very different ways.
Saunas naturally promote higher levels of sweating which results in greater weight loss (and the need to consume fluids). Furthermore, several sauna sessions can be done one after the other to intensify the “warm up” and “cool down” experience.
On the downside, a home sauna can be an expensive and “space-consuming” luxury, while a steam room can be part of a modern all-purpose shower cube.
