Judo Cutting Weight – The Over 100kg Weight Division

I recently went to a National Junior Championship (17, 18 and 19 years) and specifically saw the more than 100 kg weight division. I thought judo cutting weight wouldn’t be a problem at all for these big guys. The most important thing is to be more than 100 kg to be better. In many cases if they entered an “all you can eat contest” they would all win.

However, when I saw the range between the lightest, who wanted 104 kg and the heaviest with 148 kg, I started to have some doubts. The weight difference amounted to 44kg! It is almost the same difference between the lightest weight division 55kg existing in this age group and the heaviest 100kg.

Normally in all judo competitions, unless it is an open one, if it is necessary that it can be, that two closest weight divisions come together. However, it is always an issue regarding safety, especially when minors are involved. Therefore, the 55 kg weight division could be merged with the 60 kg, or 60 kg with 66 kg and so on, but the officials would never dream of uniting the 55 kg with the 100 kg. But when it comes to the redistribution, this seems to happen “naturally”.

Of course, one can say that in judo it is not a question of weight, but skills, that there are open matches without weight differences and so on. And to tell you the truth, the lightest athlete, who weighed 104 kg at this National Championship, won the bronze medal. He was not only technically very skilled, but also had an excellent physical preparation.

Nevertheless, among the lightest judo players of the division over 100 kg, the question was asked about cutting weight: at 104, 106 or 107 kg, wouldn’t it be wiser to do something to get into the 100 kg division? Given the age and the fact that they are still teenagers, is it really wise to cut weight? It is typical for the youth to find drastic measures to solve the issue: they starve themselves to death to get the 100 kg classification and then lose immediately because they no longer have the energy to oppose the opponent.

There is certainly a more constructive approach to this matter by simply following a balanced nutrition plan, learning how to handle food in a proper way to always be at peak performance to avoid adding the judo practice the problem of cutting weight is.
