Self Esteem and Bullying

Bullying has become such a big problem in recent years, but it has been a psychologically damaging problem that has been around for many, many decades. Your parents were probably bullied or knew someone who was. Their parents were bullied or knew someone who was, and their parents were bullied or knew someone who was. Not only that, but many of the adults you are surrounded by could have been the bullies themselves. Most of the time, bullying is done on purpose, but there can be very few instances where bullying can happen by accident. Take for example the most recent episode happening at the elementary school where I work. One of my kindergarteners overheard two fifth graders calling each other names (awkward and stupid) and laughing about it. So he decided to start chanting the word “awkward” and pointing at one of the girls. One kindergartner turned to two then three and before we knew it there was a circle of about ten kindergartners singing. Then we realized what was going on but by then we were too late. We got the little ones quiet and started asking questions. It turns out that these little fifth graders call each other names overheard. The girls played, were silly with each other and name calling was ok between them. Once the girl started hearing it from a group of children who continued to sing despite the several times they were asked to stop, it became uncomfortable. Her friends were with her, yet, no one went to get help to stop the little kids. Regardless of the age difference, (a kindergartner calling a fifth grader awkward), at that point we can be considered bullying. It made the fifth grader feel bad, uncomfortable and embarrassed. However, it was unintentional. The preschooler didn’t know better, but they do know better now.

As children, we don’t understand that sometimes we have no control over how we dress, how we look, or how we eat. We tend to get bullied for being too short or too tall. To be too dark or to be too light. People are made fun of for being too thin or overweight. Back in my day people were bullied for being too smart! Being called a nerd was insulting. Now it seems you get bullied if you’re not that smart. You guys want to fit the Nerd profile. Have you ever stopped and thought that “overweight” person you make fun of has a medical condition that prevents him/her from being at a healthy weight? Do you ever stop and think that person who dresses “out of fashion” might have a financial situation at home? Do you ever stop and think that, that person who is extremely quiet, shy and to themselves maybe has a bad situation at home? They may go through a divorce from the parents, an abuse, or another unknown situation. The person who may have “weird” skin may have a medical condition that they cannot control and there may be no medication to help their condition. Is it fair for us to punish each other because we don’t understand or know each other’s situations?

But let’s take a look at why people can bully others. If you’ve ever been talked about, if you’ve ever experienced any kind of belittling, think of that person who made you feel bad. What are they missing? What are they going through? Who makes them feel powerless or afraid? Bullies are usually the people who have very little to no self-esteem. Very little to no self-confidence, so they have to do something to build themselves up. To feel better than others. They can be bullied elsewhere and the only way they can stop is by doing it to others. Of course, there is no reason that justifies bullying.

If we all worked on loving ourselves bullying would happen less. The reason for this is because if you can truly learn to love yourself and believe in yourself, what others would say to you would not matter. And if you truly love yourself, there would be no need to make others feel bad to get pleasure for yourself.

Every day is a new beginning and every night be thankful for another day. Remember that no matter how bad you think your day went, there is someone else who would give anything for your life. Remember that no matter how difficult you think your parents are, they are there trying to do the best with what they have. As parents, we remember what it was like to be a teenager, however, times change, and the more you talk to us, the more we can help and guide you. We have the best intentions to give you a better life than we had and you will want to do the same when you are older. But before you can give yourself a better life, you need to focus on school to get the most information possible. Having fun is great, but set goals for yourself. Visualize and imagine all the great things you want to be and make a plan to work towards them, fun will happen along the way.

Finally, I want to leave by saying, smile! A smile could change the world. A smile could fill an empty heart. We all want to be accepted and loved, it’s in our DNA.
