Painful Piles – Hemorrhoids
I suffer from internal piles, which have gotten progressively worse since I had my two children. I have tried everything to no avail. I’m scared at the thought of surgery, although I don’t know exactly what it would be. Please can you advise me?
Piles – or hemorrhoids as they are medically known – are enlarged veins, like varicose veins on the leg, located in the lower parts of the rectum, intestine and anus. Internal hemorrhoids are located in the cavity of the intestine, in the anus or rectal area; external, which are the most common, protrude outside the anus. This condition is not serious, but the symptoms, including bleeding, itching and discomfort during defecation, are difficult and can be deeply uncomfortable or painful. If you have blood from the anus, you should consult your doctor immediately, as it may be an indication of something more serious.
Hemorrhoids are caused by pressure on the veins, causing them to swell. It is rather like a balloon: if you blow it up again and again, the shape and size change. Piles usually result from constipation, pregnancy, carrying heavy weights and standing for long periods of time. If you are constipated, you strain to pass stool, which is usually hard or sticky, and the downward pressure on the veins increases, causing the walls to distend. It is very common to develop piles after having children, as in your case.
Pregnancy causes particular problems in the third trimester, when the weight of the fetus on the veins of the colon and rectum can cause tension; then, in childbirth, intense pressure is directed downwards, which further expands the walls of the veins. In most cases, hemorrhoids due to pregnancy disappear soon after birth.
Internal hemorrhoids cause bleeding more easily because the hard stool masses cause their walls to scratch and tear. However, it is external hemorrhoids that can cause the greatest discomfort, because the mucus dries on the anal tissue, forming crystals of salt and protein, which itch like crazy. Then, when the ring of muscles called the anal sphincter closes after defecation, it strangulates the external hemorrhoids, sometimes causing persistent pain, even at night. The pain means that passing stools causes further discomfort and may involve further bleeding. In fact, hemorrhoids are a common cause of anemia due to the chronic daily blood loss.
Conventional medical treatment may consist of topical or suppository corticosteroids to reduce the swelling and itching, and/or an anesthetic spray to help relieve pain. If this does not work, small internal hemorrhoids can be treated by sclerotherapy, in which the affected area is injected with a solution that shrinks the veins; alternatively, a band is placed around the base, causing the hemorrhoids to shrink and fall off. If these measures fail, doctors may consider electrical, laser or infrared heat treatment or surgical removal, which can be very uncomfortable. Although the surgery is done under general anesthesia, the wound cannot be stitched due to the risk of infection in this germ-filled area, so the patient is left with a large and painful gash.
Anyone with hemorrhoids should take immediate action. Don’t let the hemorrhoids grow. The most important thing is to change your diet to ensure that the stools are soft, which will make your life a lot easier.
Here are my suggestions:
* Drink two liters of still pure water daily, especially between meals; but avoid swallowing a lot of water at once because it can make you sick.
* If you have a tendency to be constipated, eat a portion of the following daily: papaya, figs, prunes, bananas, beet spinach and bran.
* Avoid acidic foods including citrus fruits, chili, excess salt, coffee and alcohol.
* If very constipated, take one tablet Qurs Mullayan – an herbal supplement to help bowel movement – three months before bedtime.
* Also take one to two tablespoons of isabgol psyllium husks in a glass of water before bedtime. Drink quickly as it turns to jelly within seconds.
* Take one tablet twice a day of Hamdroid – an herbal supplement to help heal and prevent hemorrhoids – for two months.
* After going to the toilet, use a wet tissue to wipe the area, as hard or rough paper can cause chafing. After wiping, the hemorrhoids push back into the rectum where they stay moist. This may hurt at first, but they will heal better in the body.
* Do this exercise: contract and release the anus 20 times, three to four times a day: You can do this in any position.
* If the hemorrhoids hurt, apply ice cubes.
