Contest Prep for the Bodybuilder

Lately there has been a lot of talk about building muscle and losing fat. There are many miracle diets and exercises on the market today. Most bodybuilders are confused and confused about what to do. Whether you’re getting ready for a show or if you just want to look your best for the beach, there are steps you need to take to make sure you succeed!

First Rule… Train for strength, Muscle!

Rule Two… Eat for definition!

Rule Three… Prepare ahead of time!

The first thing to do is decide what kind of shape you are today and where you want to be when you walk on stage or on the beach!

Use a mirror, it will not deceive! When I competed, I knew I was in shape when just below my belly button, the skin was transparent, meaning, there was no fat. If I’m holding body fat there, I know I’m not thin enough.

The second thing is to start early in your contest preparation. I will actually start dieting, depending on my shape, weeks out, sometimes 16 weeks or more, so that I can reach my lowest body fat level a month after the show. I would then eat my way up to my best shape where I would compete. The advantage here is to get rid of the stress of being on a very low calorie diet. I will walk on stage looking healthy and energetic.

The third thing is NEVER add aerobics unless it is absolutely necessary. Remember, your goal is to go to the biggest and hardest show you can. If you’re doing aerobics, you’re not going to be at your best and best, because now you’re cross-training. Start the week ahead of time so you don’t panic while doing lots of last-minute aerobics to get rid of any leftover fat. This will burn muscle and fat, the opposite of what you want. Walking is OK at a leisurely pace.

The fourth thing is to train for strength. High Intensity Training guys! Tight, simple and sparse! The stronger you are the bigger and more muscular you are. I’m at my strongest a few weeks before a show, always! Forget light weight and high rep nonsense! We are all anatomical charts under the blanket of fat we wear on our bodies, no matter how much or how little. I left the last few weeks to take a break from training and perfect my posing routine.

DIET

Although there are different types of diets… low fat, high fat, high protein etc. It’s calories in and calories out. Follow a balanced diet while reducing your calories by 500-1000 a day. The best way to know your calorie maintenance level is to write down everything you eat for three days to a week. The longer the better. Add up the calories you have consumed and divide them by the same, three to seven days. If you’re not losing or gaining any weight, that’s your maintenance level. If that’s an average of 3000 calories a day, start by cutting back to 2500 calories a day and monitor yourself in the mirror and on the scale. You should start to lose about a pound of fat a week but should not experience any loss of strength.

EXERCISE

Muscle and fat are two different things. Your goal is to train to maintain or increase your strength and thus your muscles. How? By training intensively, briefly and rarely…once every four to seven days, based on your level and progress. Remember, we’re talking about muscle here, not fat. Your body fat levels are managed by your diet. There should be no change in your training for the show except maybe getting bigger and stronger. Remember too, that dieting will add extra stress factors to your body so be aware of that and how you feel. If you find you’re still not healed and need an extra rest day, no problem. Monitor your calories and take in the rest.

I find I make some of my best gains when practicing for a show because of the emotion that goes into it, the thought and effort.

POSING

Practice your posing. There are many great movies of bodybuilders in the past. I’ve always liked Mike Mentzer and Ed Corney. Get this movie and watch it. Train yourself to smile while striking graceful poses with ease, if that’s your style.

Find the music you want to pose to. Classical music is great, but I also used to sing the “Iron Man” theme song. Whatever you choose, practice, practice, practice! It not only burns calories but allows you to achieve the muscle control needed to display your hard-earned muscles.

Learn how to transition from one pose to another. Set up a posing light in front of a full-length mirror, front and back, and start practicing from scratch. Practice your mandatory pose by holding it for a minute or two. Start shopping for styles, colors, and cuts. Black is a great color to start with and then you can go from there.

CARBOHYDRATE LOADING

Carb loading is done to keep your muscles as hard and as strong as possible when you walk on stage. This technique is done a little differently by many, so I will provide the process I used to load for the contest.

If I’m going to compete on Saturday, I’ll start the process on Monday. Last week I would do little other than pose every day. My training will stop almost completely, except for workouts at the beginning of the week. Other than that I will stay active, walking and taking pictures every day, sometimes taking pictures for an hour or two!

Starting Monday, reduce your carbohydrate intake to less than 30 grams per day and increase your fat intake to compensate. We don’t want to cut calories at this point so replace with fat. Monitor your carbs and protein and increase your fat to your calorie level. Make sure you drink plenty of water because it will look as if you are urinating, due to the lack of carbohydrates to hold water in the muscles.

Thursday morning, you will reduce the fat in your diet, reduce your protein a little, and add carbohydrates to your diet. Not just any carbs, but ones that are low on the glycemic index. We want to start eating carbohydrates every two and a half to three hours, small meals; you can add some protein but mostly carbs. At this point we want to limit water intake to only that controlled by thirst. What will happen is that when you start consuming carbohydrates, it will start to drive water into the muscles, including any water that your body may be holding under the skin. Your body is very efficient! Don’t overdo it! Stay within your caloric needs, we don’t want any overflow to smooth you over at this point.

By Friday, during the day you should look beautiful. Keep doing your posing but nothing else. Limit your posing to Friday because I want you fresh for Saturday.

Saturday morning, have a good breakfast but be careful with salt and sugar etc. Don’t overeat but don’t undereat either. Sip water do not drink. After making a preconception don’t blow it, continue monitoring your diet for the evening show. good luck

TIPS and SECRETS

If you get to a point in your progress in losing body fat where you get stuck, stop dieting for a day! Eat anything and everything you choose but then the next day, even though you might hold water and seem to have gained a few pounds, don’t worry. This will jumpstart your metabolism. A fun way to kick off!

You can sometimes lock your metabolism with lack of sleep. Start by either waking up an hour earlier or going to be an hour later. As long as you don’t feel tired, you should be fine. Although coffee and caffeine have negative effects, they are also important for metabolism and help before exercise

IF YOU MUST

If your metabolism is such that you cannot reduce your calories while eating a balanced diet, which becomes impossible below 1200 calories… then, add some cycling or walking. No more than three times a week for no more than 30 to 45 minutes. This is especially relevant for light athletes and women. Be careful with aerobics.

MY FINAL THOUGHTS

If you stick to science, and think about it, you will never be confused or confused. The science of bodybuilding has strict principles just like the science of nutrition. I wish you success in achieving your bodybuilding goals, whatever they may be!
