The Two Main Qualities That Modeling Agencies Look for in a Model

The thought of trying out models or the thought if we were good enough to be a model ourselves has crossed our minds at least once in our lives. Probably, while looking through magazines or walking through the posters of models wearing H&M clothing, we may have had the thought of being a model and maybe later that we will quickly pull the thoughts off our shoulders and think ‘neh , I will never be good enough to be a model’. Honestly, modeling agencies are looking for someone more than just a pretty face, they’re looking for people with X-factors and great personality that they don’t see every day. In fact, many of us have taken the qualities to be a model. We all just need that little surge of courage to try instead of just having the thought in our head.

Now you are probably thinking ‘Okay well, what attributes or qualities do we need to have to get ourselves contracts with agencies?’ No matter what type of model you want, whether it’s niche modeling, high fashion, editorial, advertising or body part modeling, agencies all over the world are mostly looking for these few similar qualities.

  1. Physical

You must have the right physical qualities for the right assignments. Because there are different requirements according to types of models.

  • High demands

Let’s start with height, for runway you need to be at least 5’7 to 6’0 for women and 5’9 to 6’2 for men. While the height requirement is moderate when it comes to editorials and TV commercials. So you don’t have to be super tall to be on TV.

  • Weight Requirements

‘Okay, my height is good, but I’m pretty tall’. You have to be healthy and fit to be a fashion model nowadays, it is forbidden for too stick thin models to walk the runway. The weight of models is usually measured together with their height and weight or in short BMI (Body Mass Index). BMI is used as a screening device to demonstrate whether a man is underweight, overweight, overweight or a solid weight for his stature. Hence, it helps to provide accurate information regarding the health level of a model. So you can’t be too skinny to be on the job – Fit is the new skinny. As for TV commercials and print ads, agencies widely welcome people of all heights and sizes. Real life models are used as part of publicity or corporate crusades, when organizations hope to speak to ordinary audiences. In an example, sometimes pharmaceutical advertisements need a slightly more intense model for demonstration. Another example would be insurance ads; they usually show a family, couple or even the elderly. They are not very tall or skinny either, they are just like you and me. Food for thought for those who would like to try but never have the courage to do so until you read this.

  • Good posture

A good posture goes a long way. We don’t want sleazy models wearing Alexander Wang walking the runway or some sleazy talent promoting toothpaste on TV. Why is good posture so important? It affects the way you carry yourself and the brand, everyone wants someone who can carry themselves with poise. Furthermore, a bad posture brings severe pain to your neck, shoulder and back, causing fatigue. Certainly, you don’t want to feel tired during your shooting while posing or while walking on runways for hours. Good posture is essential for all of us, not just models but everyone. So, carry yourself with poise.

  • ‘The Face’

Agencies usually look for people with a chiseled facial structure and of course high cheekbones; this is usually because they tend to appear magically beautiful on the job or in photographs. That jaw line so sharp it cuts. So what if you don’t have a well-sculpted face? Don’t worry, there is definitely room for you. Not everyone is so blessed to have sharp features, but even if you don’t, there will still be assignments for you! Like how oval faces go well with any and I mean any hairstyle. Great for hair shows as clients and agencies look for faces that have high adaptability. That doesn’t mean you’re beautiful or wickedly handsome, it means you can land bookings. Customers are looking for quality faces that are easily customizable for as many types of looks as possible!

  1. attitude

Great attitude takes you to heights. I’m sure you’ve heard of models who have snobbish attitudes. Those models don’t really do well and don’t really go far in the modeling industry. Modeling is more than what you think it is, it is hard hard work. To be a model, you have to be extremely adaptable to all kinds of situations for long hours.

  • Patience

Sometimes models have a very limited amount of rest, suffering from jet lag as they often hop on the fastest flight to another city for a shoot or show after one. The excruciatingly long wait in the casting rooms after a 12-hour flight with another hundred models trying to book shows. When it comes to clients, you will deal with clients of all attitudes. You may not like them, but you can’t stop in the middle of the shoot, can you? So you have to push and play your role well to make them like you. So agencies look for models with extreme patience.

  • Adaptability

Let’s not even get started on the terrain models and the production crew going to just to get the perfect shot. Sometimes they travel to muddy areas, tropical rainforest, rocky mountains or even hot desert for shoots, which push models to the limit. But after that it would be worth it because they get big cash and a million dollar photo printed on high profile magazine spreads like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and more. Wouldn’t that look amazingly beautiful in your portfolio?

  • Communication forms

Didn’t your mother tell you to always say hello and end with ‘thank you’? Greetings may sound simple, but it goes a long way. Always, always greet your clients. Even a simple ‘Hi, how are you?’ with a bright smile can really make their day a brighter one, maybe they had a bad casting day and are dying for someone who can make them rejoice ‘She/He is the one!’. So be that person! Be that model where people would be so happy to see you at castings. Here is a tip, even if you are not sure if you will successfully book the show or not always thank them for giving you this wonderful opportunity and their precious time. Trust me, they would be so happy to have you and if you are lucky enough, remember that you are that model with courage and gratitude. Let people remember you for the good things you did!

  • Confidence

To be a model, one of the most important attributes is confidence. It is easy to tell if you are confident by the way you walk, talk, facial expression. Clients and agencies are always looking for people with confidence and notice that there is a fine line between being confident and being arrogant. Whatever you wear or do, if there is confidence, it makes your product brighter and stronger. This makes it easier for agencies to sell you to the wider world. Confidence is the key to booking shows and impressing clients.

Now you know what qualities agencies look for in a model. Now do your inner model a favor and check out your nearest legitimate modeling agencies and give it a shot! You never know you might impress the agencies and land that dream contract you once dreamed of when you were younger. Remember to always be yourself!
