One of my favorite movies is ‘Batman Begins’. During a training scene, Bruce Wayne is told by his mentor that “The Will is Everything”. When it comes to building muscle and strength this is very true. I’m going to tell you some great tricks and techniques you can use to gain muscle fast, but unless you have ‘the will’, no amount of advice will help you bulk up. But if you are willing to train, willing to work hard, and if you have the will to work at it; then the advice below will give you all the information you need to build muscle and bulk up.

The human body can basically gain weight in two ways. Either as fat or as muscle. In an adult, a healthy metabolism maintains body weight by adjusting the amount of muscle worn, and the amount of fat stored. Because metabolisms vary from person to person, some people find it easier to gain weight as fat, while others find it easier to build weight as muscle. Most people do not want, or choose to gain weight or fat. Unfortunately, the body will not build muscle without a nutritional surplus. The more muscle your body carries, the more energy it needs to maintain itself. So it won’t even think about adding more muscle weight until it’s sure there’s enough nutrition available to support it.

Because of this muscle/fat relationship, it is impossible to gain muscle-weight quickly and maintain the same level of tone and definition. This does not mean that you are less healthy; the body is naturally designed to carry some fat. And you can always show up later!

Quality not quantity

Train your muscles to get bigger

The biggest mistake people make when trying to gain muscle mass is over training their muscles. Of course, I’m not saying that the key to gaining muscle is being lazy. You have to work hard, and you will be sore the next day! But what you need to make sure is that you are in pain for the right reasons and that you are training hard in the right way.

If you want to bulk, the way you train is as, if not more important than how much you train. In fact, if you want to get the most out of your training, you will need to have solid periods of rest. Including days off from training.

Many people make the mistake of thinking that more training means faster gains. But there is no need to spend hours curling weights and working out. In fact, if you’re serious about bulking, you may very well find that you need to cut back on the time you spend working out. Sounds weird doesn’t it? But the simple fact is that your body will only grow in response to the right kind of stress.

If you stress your muscles in the wrong way, they won’t get bigger. It doesn’t matter how many hours you spend training if you train them the wrong way.

Composition vs Isolation

Apply the right kind of stress

Isolation does not work. If you take away one thing from this, I hope it’s the knowledge that isolation exercises don’t work for bulking.

There is a time for isolation later when you have already built the mass you want. Isolation is essential for toning. But while you try to build, it will only slow you down, or hinder your ability to win completely. The body only has so much material to work with; no matter how much you can take in through nutrition or supplements, the body works with limited resources. This means that it can only repair and grow at a certain rate.

When you exercise tissue is damaged by stress, and wear and tear. The body must then spend valuable nutrients on repairing and rebuilding the damaged tissue. When you spend hours doing isolation exercises, you are doing a lot of damage to the body to deal with, but not the right kind of damage. So your body will just concentrate on maintaining the muscles, not making them bigger. You’re just not using the right kind of stress to stimulate hypertrophy.

Imagine your body is a boat, and every day you take it out to sea and it gets damaged by rough tides or the weather. You bring it back in and you’ve done some repairs, get a few holes patched up; and then you go out every day and the same holes open up again. But they are easy enough to fix and the boat is still seaworthy, so you stick with it and keep repeating this same cycle.

Now imagine that one day you hit a storm and your boat is torn to pieces. You barely manage to make it back to shore alive. You decide that the repairs are no longer cutting it, and decide what you need is a bigger, harder boat. The investment in a new boat is a better option than repairing the old one.

If you want bulk, you have to take your body by storm.

You need to apply the right level of stress to make the investment in bigger muscles the best option for the body.
