Then there is the big question of what food to eat during pregnancy and how not to gain too much weight. I wish I had known this when I was pregnant because I wondered how my child had acquired such a desire for chocolate at such a young age. I think it must have been from the age of one that the first thing she asked for in the morning was chocolate (“gocolate” actually) – maybe it had something to do with the fact that while I was pregnant, my nightly ritual would be to go to bed early with my book, a bar of chocolate (usually a king size bar) and big mug of hot chocolate. Of course we didn’t let her have chocolate for breakfast – but I’ll give the girl her due, she had insatiable perseverance and still does to this day!
During pregnancy and especially in the early pregnancy symptoms when I felt sick all day, I seemed to revert to my child hood and crave foods like; fish fingers, baked beans and mashed potatoes; chicken nuggets, baked beans and mashed potatoes; soup and mashed potatoes, I even enjoyed mushy peas on toast and lots and lots of chocolate on a very regular basis. No matter how hard I tried to eat healthy, I just couldn’t shake the cravings for such foods. I think I went through a phase later in pregnancy where I had blueberries and yogurt, but this phase didn’t last long. I was never a blueberry fan before I was pregnant and never have been since.
It’s hard to control your cravings and at the same time know what foods to eat for pregnancy because there’s so much to think about and it can all seem a little overwhelming, but since reading that a baby can actually taste what you eat while they are in the womb I think I should have tried a little harder to curb my cravings and eat a little healthier because it has changed my child’s eating habits because everything what she wants to eat, funnily enough, is really boring food like chicken nuggets, fish fingers and mashed potatoes. She will occasionally choose the odd pea or runner bean, but she is not so keen on baked beans.
