Karate Too Tense For Self-Defence!

As a karate practitioner for some time I have often had stress to relax, when doing your techniques you are far too tense.

The maximum of all actions should be to relax naturally without straining your body. The echoes of those basic commands can be heard in karate dojo around the country. Indeed, has done since our empty hand art was first conceived. So why does it seem so new to many students practicing today?

Let me briefly explain, martial arts of long ago used this relaxed way of moving, but over the years and the development of modern sports karate techniques, the need to develop muscle strength became more and more popular, because people wanted to increase their body strength quickly to improve.

So of course changes were inevitable in the way people trained. However, while getting stronger and also building muscle, which in itself is not a bad thing, it leaves itself open to potential injury to the participant. Back, lower limbs and joints are most susceptible to injury.

Unfortunately, weight training can force the body to strain, especially if you’re trying to lift a very heavy weight. Too much tension in the body can be detrimental to your overall health and therefore counterproductive in terms of your karate training.

As one of the tenants of the martial arts and karate in particular is to develop and maintain a healthy body until old age, so that you can continue training and have a long life. However, you will notice that learning to use your body in a relaxed way more naturally during training will suddenly become more difficult. If you have been doing that as a complementary exercise to your karate weight training, which by definition requires you to tense up when you try that heavy lift with the weight and the bar.

You see, too much tension in your body can cause you injury while exercising. That said, however, there’s no reason modern bodybuilding training methods and karate can’t work hand in hand.

It’s true, tight muscles don’t come from weight training by itself, and I realize it may contradict what I’ve said before, but the important point here is improper use of the body during training can cause injury. Therefore, learning proper training methods combined with an understanding of how your body works is most important.

It appears that when a student east or west tries to do karate techniques, they get so excited that they forget to relax their muscles while performing the said movement. You see, the problem is if you try a technique while your body is tense, you will pay the price in the speed at which you do the same technique. What I mean by this in short is, if you are trying for power all the time, your muscles will be tense all the time, you have to learn to relax your muscles and use your natural energy to get more power in your technique.

You will also find that you are unable to gain speed in your technique because of this excess tension in your body. More importantly, lack of speed can mean the difference between a win or defeat either in a competition or on the street where, by the way, you will not get a second chance.

To do good karate, you must try to use soft and hard correctly, always try to avoid hasty techniques and tense muscles. Watch how many older karate masters practice their kata and other techniques and see how relaxed they are while performing them. Why do you think karate masters of old or other martial arts masters don’t seem to have big bulging muscles but trim, lean muscles and not a big frame at all? That’s what this article is about, so I hope the answer speaks for itself.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, an understanding of karate is important to develop the correct technique, kime, timing combined with the proper and natural use of your body. I’m afraid there are no short cuts to learning any of this, just practice, practice, practice. All of the above as well as strength comes from a lot of good hard training. In most cases, especially where women are concerned, they do not need weight training to be strong enough to handle men during training. As a woman, if you train for a healthy body and enjoy karate, that’s all that matters.

All students should try to remember, one of your main goals in karate and one of the reasons why you started training in the first place is the simple fact, to maintain enthusiasm in your chosen art so that you will have a long, long time can train and maybe even end up learning and passing on knowledge learned to other beginners some time in the future just like your instructor did too.

Remember that to get well you must practice every day to keep your joints loose and your body flexible, relax and try not to tense your body as much as you can, breathe from just below the naval, the center of your body not from the chest.

Relaxing your muscles and learning to use your natural energy along with proper breathing is very important and one of the foundational principles when it comes to karate training. Learning to do this will improve both your daily life and your karate training, because without breathing there is no life. See my point?

One last passing thought, Karate is an art and should be practiced as such. If you study the vital points and train regularly with your body’s weapons, you will have effective karate, confidence and strength. You don’t have to try to be all muscle. Enough said.

stay safe,

Buzz Campion.
