The History of Weight Loss – Bring on the Fat Flappers

If you ever get a history book, flip through and take special note of what body sizes seem to be the norm for each time period. Body weights and ideals have changed over the years, just as they continue to do now. What’s in fashion can be determined by the type of clothing that’s popular — some styles just need thinner frames to fit right. Some cultures will worship a larger member because it is a sign of prosperity – only the rich can be fat. Americans stand back — here only very skinny rich people.

Why is that? Is it because rich people are given “magic” foods that allow them to stay thin? In reality, rich people stay that way because they are fed small, branded meals created by personal chefs and they have trainers, nutritionists and others working around the clock to keep them that way. There is no magic involved.

Skinny and fat have been knocking each other off the top of the popularity charts for hundreds of years. Take a look at the creations of some of the world’s most famous artists; see which models they choose to work with. Ruben would be laughed at by the art community if he were alive today and still chose the same model. Her plump, juicy lips are definitely not the thin, malnourished girls who are models these days, right?

Now, look at another era. Look at Flappers for example. Knees, flat chest and very skinny, Flappers were ideal for that time. Of course, there may have been Rubenesque women who wanted to wear sarongs too, but history certainly doesn’t point to them. Even then, it was the body types that epitomized the standards of the day that got notice while others were ignored, or worse, mocked.

When thinness became fashionable, dieting became the norm. The most extreme diet then is the most extreme diet now — fasting. Religious leaders and their faithful followers would fast for days and would experience weight loss (of course) as well as the potential for visions. If the fast lasts too long, weight loss will be followed by death until the fasting person begins to put two and two together. Not eating equals weight loss, but can equal death too. The aha moment was quickly followed by an adaptation of fasting: Modified fasting.

Sometimes during fasting and modified fasting and starvation and death, science discovered calories and the diet industry was born. Now, doctors and snake oil salesmen have a word to shout at you and a number to recommend. No one fully understands the diet and daily requirements have not been discovered yet, so no one knows how many calories a person needs or from what foods those calories should come from.

Those who dieted early caught that starvation itself was ineffective because it led to their death. Eating less effectively so they will stick to a very low calorie count; around 1000 calories. The problem with staying low is that it is impossible to keep the body healthy, whole and healthy. What they discovered then is the same thing that a dieter trying to maintain that calorie count will find: You can’t stick with it.

As more research is done and science begins to unravel the concept of the body’s own metabolism and processes, the savvy dieter changes the 1000 calorie diet to avoid the body’s own destruction. They would stay at the magic number but all those calories would come from protein and the birth of the first extreme protein diet trend had begun. The problem here is the same with the next all-protein diet, and the ones after that, as well as the problem with all other extreme diets in general: Any diet that allows you, forces you, or encourages you to eat only one group or type of food and prohibiting, limiting or ignoring all others is unhealthy and doomed to eventual failure.

Remember a few years ago when protein diets made a big comeback? Suddenly everyone is eating burgers, but no bread. You can have a pan full of meat, but you can’t have toast to get rid of the fat. Eat a pound of beef at every meal, but don’t you dare let a potato touch your lips. The list of vegetables that are on the no-no list for this diet is untrue and even worse – fruits are banned just like Death by Chocolate cake. Fruits are forbidden in the protein diet and are slandered like any dessert. All fruits. Everytime.

But, extreme protein diets, modified fasting and other weight loss efforts are not easy and at that time, people are looking for easier ways to lose weight. Before anyone thinks that modern men have a corner on the market for weight loss gadgets and gimmicks, know this: In the 1900s one of the first weight loss pills was developed, along with tonics, elixirs and other products that all aimed to tighten and reduce without getting tired actually need to watch what you eat or exercise. Among the first pills was a pill containing benzocaine, which would not only dull the appetite but would produce an odd tingling sensation in the mouth that would make it difficult to enjoy food, which would hopefully cause the user to eat less. Well, yes, that would work because most people don’t eat if they can’t feel their mouths, but the side effect is chewing through your tongue every day. Of course, there are still people doing modified versions of this concept to this day. They brush their teeth after every meal or whenever they feel hungry. The concept is that no one wants to ruin that squeaky clean feeling in their mouth and besides who wants minty fresh potato chips?

Everyone wants us to believe something different about weight loss. The doctor wants us to believe that we desperately need metabolic help so he can give us the latest prescription drug. Gym teachers and gadget gods want us to work out, but only using their equipment. Infomercials want us to use pills, powders, potions, creams or what have you. Authors become experts or otherwise want us to buy their books. Watch my videos, listen to my inspirational tapes; buy, buy buy In the end, the only thing that gets thinner is your wallet and all the equipment and stuff in the world won’t help you if you don’t learn the basics of weight loss. You need to exercise. You need the right amount of calories and you need to understand what calories are, where they come from and how they act in your body. The next chapter will help you get started with that knowledge.
