Weight Loss Surgery and Its Different Types

For obese people, losing weight can be a never-ending struggle. There are a number of people who have struggled for years to get rid of extra bulging flesh from their bodies but have been unsuccessful.

Such obese people who fail to reach their target weight through diet, exercise and diet pills, can benefit from the various weight loss surgical procedures available.

Obesity is spreading like wildfire around the world, and in many countries including the United States it has become a serious health concern. It is estimated that nearly 64.5 percent of the adult population in the United States or about 127 million are obese, and 5 to 10 million of them are severely obese. The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that nearly 2.3 billion people will be overweight and more than 700 million of them will be obese by 2015.

In the past decade, explosive growth in obesity and morbid obesity rates have provided a significant boost to the popularity of bariatric surgery.

There are different types of bariatric surgery procedures that can give you relief from the excess flab you have accumulated on your body over the years. This weight loss surgery has a proven history of success in helping obese patients achieve significant and long-term weight loss.

Listed below are the different surgical weight loss procedures:

Gastric Bypass: It is a popular weight loss surgery known as Roux-en-Y (RNY) gastric bypass surgery. Surgery requires a reduction in the size of the stomach and the length of the small intestine. During surgery, a bariatrician attaches a Y-shaped section of small intestine directly to the newly formed smaller upper pouch, which allows food to bypass the entire stomach and most of the small intestine. That helps in limiting the absorption of calories and nutrients, thus allowing patients to feel full faster.

Gastric bypass is the most common weight loss surgery performed in the United States. Gastric bypass recipients can expect to lose up to 65% of their excess body fat. After surgery, patients may be able to leave the hospital after two days and it may take 1 to 2 weeks to return to light work.

Gastric Sleeve: Gastric sleeve surgery or sleeve gastrectomy as it is widely known is a stomach reduction procedure in which bariatric surgeons permanently remove approximately 85 percent of the stomach. After surgery, the stomach takes the shape of a tube or sleeve. This banana-like tube creates a restrictive process that restricts the amount of food the patient takes. After gastric sleeve surgery your stomach becomes smaller, you feel full faster than usual, and as a result you lose weight.

Gastric Line: Also called laparoscopic gastric banding, this type of bariatric surgery is the second most commonly performed weight loss surgery, after gastric bypass. Lap band surgery is a reversible and relatively less invasive procedure, in which a silicone band is fitted around the upper part of the abdomen, dividing it into two halves. The newly created stomach pouch can hold a small amount of food at a time, which helps patients lose weight. Lap band surgery is much safer than gastric bypass and gastric sleeve and has fewer risks. Gastric banding patients can expect to lose 50 to 60 percent of their excess weight.

Gastric plication: It is a laparoscopic procedure that reduces the size of the abdomen without removing parts of the abdomen or repositioning the bowel or implanted devices. During a laparoscopic gastric plication, the surgeon reduces the volume of the stomach by folding the stomach inward.

Surgery reduces stomach volume by 70%, therefore limiting food intake. The gastric fold is a reversible bariatric procedure and can be converted to another procedure if necessary.

Duodenal Switch: Duodenal switch (DS) is a limited, malabsorptive weight loss surgical procedure in which approximately 70% of the stomach is removed to create a cylindrical pouch, connecting the remaining portion to the upper part of the small intestine, instead of the duodenum.

Commonly referred to as BPD/DS, or Switch for short, the duodenal switch has been shown to be successful in previous studies. Some studies have confirmed that DS can effectively treat diabetes and sleep apnea and can be more effective in improving hypertension as well.
