Adjustable Lap Band Surgery Problems and Complications
Gastric bypass is a minimally invasive surgery for obese patients who cannot lose weight with diet, exercise or medication. This procedure does not involve the cutting of any part of the abdomen, or metal staples or any cutting or bypassing of the intestines.
Obesity in the United States has risen to epidemic levels in recent years and it is believed that if the trend continues to surge approximately 75 percent of the country’s adult population will be overweight and 41 percent will be classified as obese in 2015.
With the dramatic increase in obesity rates increases the popularity of bariatric (weight loss) surgery. Lap band surgery is one of the popular types of bariatric surgery usually indicated for people suffering from obesity (with a BMI of 40 or higher).
Gastric bypass is a revolutionary bariatric technology, yet simpler and easier than sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. Using laparoscopic techniques, bariatric surgeons place an adjustable band around your stomach instead of cutting out part of it to create a smaller pouch.
As with its counterpart, lap band surgery allows fewer portions of food to be eaten that take longer to digest. Also, patients feel full longer. Since the band is adjustable, the doctor can adjust how quickly or slowly the food eaten is digested.
In several studies it has been proven that people can lose weight as successfully with adjustable gastric band surgery as they do with gastric bypass or gastric sleeve surgery, although somewhat slower and less compared to gastric bypass.
Despite the fact that the gastric band procedure is the least invasive and safest of the various bariatric procedures, there is always a chance for problems and complications during and after this surgery.
Potential acute complications that can occur include:
• Bleeding from the insertion site of the laparoscopic instrument or the site from which the band encircles the abdomen
• Infection at the site of infusion port or site of instrument insertion
• Esophagitis or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
• Spleen damage that causes bleeding and possible removal
• Heart attack or irregular heartbeat
• Pneumonia
• Poor nutrition
• Possible conversion to conventional open surgery
• Death may occur from bleeding, blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism), abdominal perforation or heart problems
Complications specifically associated with gastric banding include:
Acute postoperative obstruction- Tape tied too tightly can cause food to block the opening from the upper stomach to the lower stomach. This can cause pain, nausea, and vomiting.
lane slip- Placed around the upper abdomen, the band can sometimes slip out of place into an unusually low position. This can cause acute stomach pain or acid reflux (heartburn) and these conditions can be treated by removing fluid from the tape or you may need a second operation.
Strip Erosion- In rare cases, the band’s silicone ring migrates through the abdominal wall into the stomach. In this unusual complication, the band actually stays partially inside the stomach instead of sitting around it. The only treatment for band migration is permanent removal of the band.
Intolerance band- In some cases, the patient’s body cannot tolerate the strip which, after all, is a foreign object implanted in the body. Strip intolerance can cause excessive vomiting or discomfort. Permanent removal of the band is the only solution in such cases.
Esophageal dilatation- In this complication the esophagus expands. It is usually caused by overeating, or a band that is too tight, or placed incorrectly.
Port problem- You can get an infection around the lap band port- where fluid is removed or added to adjust the band. Like strips, ports can move from their original location or can leak. The tube connecting the access port to the strip can also be blocked.
