Is it Possible to Eat the Medifast Way Without Buying the Food?

I recently had someone contact me and tell me that he was very impressed with what he read in his research about the Medifast diet. He felt something similar might work for him, but he was hesitant to spend the money on diet food. He wanted to know if he could eat food similar to what he could buy from the grocery store. This is a fairly common question that I have myself. And before, I tried to achieve something similar. I will discuss this further in the following article.

What You Need To Achieve If You Try Eating The Medifast Way On Your Own: One of the main reasons most people have success with this diet is that it is able to get you into ketosis where you burn your own fat very quickly. You can usually do this because the ratio of calories to carbohydrates to protein is very specific and beneficial. I know from experience that it is quite challenging to produce food that will meet these criteria. And, if you can do that, it’s usually quite expensive and time-consuming.

Also keep in mind that you will eat six times a day. When you follow this diet, you eat five prepackaged meals and then you make one larger main meal yourself. This is necessary for several reasons. First, eating regularly helps keep hunger at bay and keeps your metabolism on track for ketosis. However, while you’re eating so much, you’re also only consuming about 1,000 calories per day. Not only that, but the carbohydrate to protein ratio is mostly kept even.

If you haven’t yet researched the foods you will use to achieve this goal, I can tell you that the “safe” items under this umbrella are hard to come by. Many will have too many sugars and carbohydrates that are not friendly to ketosis. It is common to balance the low calorie and fat count with added sugar so that the taste is still pleasant.

I’ll look at Medifast’s new brownies as an example of what you need to achieve. This product has only 110 calories and 2 grams of fat. There are 15 grams of carbohydrates, but this is balanced by a very high 11 grams of protein. There are only 8 grams of sugar and 4 grams of fiber. Even if you look at health food stores, it’s quite difficult to find comparable products with a lot of protein and fiber. And, even if you do, you may find it costs more and you still have to produce four similar meals for the day.

I know that many people research DIY Medifast because they think that by “doing it yourself” they will save money. But in my experience, this is not the case. If you use a good Medifast coupon, your cost per meal for Medifast is just over $2 per meal. It’s very difficult to produce food that costs less than this, especially since you need a lot of specialized ingredients. I tried something similar when I was on the zone diet. Not only did I think I never came close to Medifast’s calorie to carb to protein ratio, but I also knew that I was spending more than $10 a day for 6 meals.

That’s not to say that if money isn’t an issue and you just love to cook, you can’t come up with something that’s low in calories and carbs while packing in high amounts of fiber and protein. I’m sure that this is probably doable for at least a few meals per day. But, I also suspect that it will be quite time consuming, expensive and challenging. However, I’m usually someone who doesn’t have much patience and prefers convenience.
