Why Do You Have Fly Away Hair With Conditions Like Androgenic Alopecia and Telogen Effluvium?

I recently received correspondence from someone who is trying to determine if his hair loss may be due to a condition such as androgenic alopecia (AGA) or telogen effluvium (TE.) He recently noticed a change in the texture of his hair. He describes this texture as one where there is a lot of “flying” hair. He wanted to know if the presence of these uncontrolled strands meant he could have AGA or TE. I answered that you can get this type of texture change with both of these conditions (as well as with other medical conditions.) I will discuss why this is true in the following article.

Why You See Changes in Texture Or “Flying Hair” With TE: When your hair grows and eventually sheds or falls out, it goes through three different stages. Hair grows actively when it is in the anagen phase, which can last for years. This is when hair is most healthy and actively maintained.

The next phase (which is often considered the transitional phase,) is the catagen phase which lasts for several weeks. During this time period, the hair is getting ready to fall out. The roots of the hair shrink slightly in preparation for this. During this time, the hair may not look its best and may look dull (but this only applies to a small percentage of hair that is in this phase.)

The last phase is called the telogen phase. This may sound familiar to you if you suffer from hair loss because when you experience TE you have an increased amount of hair that will enter this shedding phase at one time. Hair is still in the follicle, but it is not actively growing. Typically, you have 10 – 15% of the strands on your scalp in this phase at any one time. But with TE, this number increases. And this is why sometimes you see a noticeable change in texture. Hair in this stage can look different because it is not actively growing or being maintained.

If you’re shedding hair at a normal rate, it may not be enough to be noticeable or change the overall appearance of your hair. But when you experience telogen effluvium, you can have more of these strands and therefore the texture changes become more pronounced and therefore more noticeable.

Why You See Miniature Hair That Has A “Cotton Candy” Appearance In AGA: Some people will tell me that these flying feathers we’re talking about have a fluffy overall look or have the texture of cotton candy. This often lies in the fact that some hair is growing back but is negatively affected by the same androgens that cause hair loss in the first place. Affected hair can grow back with a finer and thinner texture. When this happens, it is called attenuation. If you have a lot of hair or an affected area at once, you will often see a lot of hair lying flat because it doesn’t have enough weight to do so.

I often have people tell me that if you pluck a long, very small piece of hair and push it up in the air, you will notice that it doesn’t fall out like it used to. Instead, it seems to linger in the air and float like a feather. This is because it does not have the weight of normal hair. You can usually find normal textured hair in the unaffected area, compare the two, and see a very noticeable difference.

People often ask me if I can help them see the difference between the small hairs of AGA and the texture changes in TE. This is hard because I don’t know what is “normal” or “typical” for the person asking. This is often best left to experts and professionals, but both of these conditions can give the appearance of unruly or “flyaway” hair. Other medical conditions (especially those related to the thyroid and other hormones) can also cause this appearance as well.
