Swimming Pool Fitness – No Sweat Weight-Loss

I’ve been trying to lose weight for as long as I can remember (hmmm… maybe since birth?). I had tried dieting, exercising and even taking all kinds of weight loss pills before I was in high school. These “potions” range from concentrated lemon juice to cooking vinegar to gallons of water. I didn’t have the money back then to diet, so raiding our kitchen for home remedies for obesity was the next best thing, or maybe I should say my only option.

Actually, I’m not the morbidly obese type, although at my heaviest I didn’t look like the Michelin mascot or the marshmallow man in Ghostbusters. I am generally big boned. Perhaps, my genes are also to blame for the slow metabolism because even at my mildest I have never been “skinny”.

Anyway, just for the record, I went through the usual and preferred route of eating less and moving more, but when I stopped moving, the weight came rushing back, and it came with reinforcements too! What added to my misery was my fragile bones. Being heavy all my life has taken a toll on my legs and feet. I started to feel sore and I could hear my bones crying out in pain every time I did high impact aerobics. So my old sports of Taekwondo and Boxing are out, as is going to the gym every day and pounding the treadmill until I hurt all over.

My doctor advised me to focus on low to no impact activities such as cycling and swimming. I can still continue with my gym membership but I need to make sure I don’t do bone boring workouts. I was also told to stay away from the treadmill as much as possible. Just kidding… I can still use the treadmill but I’m forbidden from running on it because it would be suicidal for my leg tendons and ligaments. Ouch!

I’m not a fan of cycling, especially if it’s a stationary bike, so I settle for the next best thing, swimming. After a while swimming laps got boring so I kept looking for “water sports” or pool fitness activities.

I did find a pool fitness routine online using floaters and a kickboard, but I craved more. I want a full pool fitness regimen. Something that would give my legs the therapeutic effect they needed and would make me lose weight at the same time.

My internet research on pool fitness showed me my options. Apart from floaters, I came across roped weights, dumbbells, joggers, belts, tubes, noodles and other equipment that can be used underwater. I also found a swimming pool fitness aerobics routine.

Wow, who knew that pool fitness had come so far? I do not. My concept of pool fitness is… swimming or soaking in the water. I never knew until recently that there is now exercise equipment made specifically for use in the pool.

I also found instructors teaching pool fitness as a weight loss alternative. Talk about no sweat weight loss! There are also those who conduct therapy sessions using the mechanics of pool fitness. Therapy + weight loss = happiness.

It seems the fitness industry has got everything and everyone covered. If you’re like me, overweight but can’t do the high-impact activities that are believed to produce the greatest weight loss results, try pool fitness. Not only will you lose weight but you can also get a tan while you’re at it.
